iPaint is a painting application for Mac OS X. It is based off of a former painting application called Paintbrush. Paintbrush hasn't been updated for almost 1 year and it was time to do something. Paint Brush and iPaint are open source and full credits are still given in iPaint. You will see dramatic changes in iPaint in iPaint 2.0. I am working hard on bringing a new evolution of painting to Mac.

I was regular user of this great small quick program when I was using Leopard OS 10.5. But after I this year finally updated to Snow Leopard, sadly the program stopped working on my new Macbook Pro with SL. Sadly. :( Basically: this program does not work on Snow Leopard. For Snow Leopard: 0.5 stars. For Leopard: 5 stars.

For complicated diagrams, I use xfig. But that has a steep learning curve and is overkill for simple figures. When I saw iPaint, I had visions of the antique MacDraw and MacPaint. They were simple to use and quite intuitive.

I downloaded the app and when I launched it, the interface looked promisingly uncluttered and somewhat MacDraw/MacPaint-like. I selected the line-drawing tool and attempted to draw a short line. The app bombed.

Perhaps there is a fix out there or some trick to make it work, but I'm not inclined to spend any time on it. If an app doesn't do the simple stuff right out of the box, I'll just delete it. Which is precisely what I just did to iPaint. Sorry, Bonzo, no banana!

This app crashed and gave me an 'unexpectedly quit' dialogue box every time I tried drawing something. I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.4 on a MacBook Pro with all the latest Apple patches.

I had exactly the same problem... latest snow leopard macbook pro and no longer have access to photoshop/flash/aftereffects I was looking for a simple programme I can draw with. It crashed twice in two minutes when all I was drawing was a line.... hmmm perhaps pencils and scan it is the answer?

Well, this app does look quite good - in the screenshots, but it's Leopard only. Guess if I could afford the update, I'd have Photoshop instead.

Is there a stable version which will work with x86 10.4?

I thought this update would bring something less Paintbrush, but all you have done is change it to HUD and these BETA features do not work.

yes fair enough they are BETA but for me they do not work AT ALL. I'm just commenting and making aware of this, even though you maybe already aware of this.

1. Can't see the difference between this and paintbrush...

2. Stop button on the toolbar is ugly
2b. The whole toolbar is ugly, i want simplicity.

3. ugly overall interface, HUD and normal windows do not integrate well together.

This is practically a bad remake of Paintbrush...

bad vote from me and as BIMMER said, not worth downloading.

I can't comment anymore on iPaint since its no longer for my platform at all. While you've gotten a very low rating so far, I also agree with Bimmer (sept for the Vanilla Draw part.) Don't stop Mac OS X does need paint. Even if Apple won't make there own version.

Use AppCleaner to uninstall any old versions/the current version, then redownload and launch it.

i will have to confess that Vanilla Draw is better due to it having more consistency and more features.

keep on going though, you may make something which worth downloading!

Vanilla Draw has the same features, ugly startup/overall interface, Giza products spammed all over it, no credit what so ever to paintbrush, Didn't even get the SUFeedURL in, which means this developer is an idiot, probably stole the idea to make an app based off of paintbrush when the guy saw iPaint, i have no idea how the logo represents a painting/drawing application, drawing can mean more then the features vanilla has, under the help the Contact button is the one to the paintbrush dev, ugly overall everything, and its twice the size for nothing...

Are you running 10.5.5? I just tested it 5 mins ago with a friend... Make sure you are on intel too. Need to give me a little more info when reporting these problems. Please IM me at f1racer328 or msn me at f1racer328@aol.com if you want a fix right now. Or have a comment. I am on now.

After different tests, the program has worked when i removed the "com.mac-fun.ipaint.pslist" and reinstall the 1.0v2

Refuses to launch. Quits immediately on startup. On my iMac G5 Intel Core 2 Duo, running Leopard OSX 10.5.5. Strange, because the previous version (1.6.1) worked well with no problems.

What SJHA and others said. I tried v1.6 a couple of days ago but the program could produce no "New" window. I figured I'd give it another shot today to see whether v1.7 resolved the problem. Nope, iPaint is still non-functional, at least on a Power Mac G5 running 10.4.11.

If you "can't do any testing" for all configurations, don't release the software claiming it "Should Work Fine with 10.4.11 Machines, and PPC. Full Universal." You're wasting our time.

A totally amateur effort, especially in this day and age. I won't bother trying iPaint again.

Well I am trying to get a PPC tester. Does ANY one on PPC with 10.4 have XCode 3.1 installed that wants to try and compile this???

The previous version I tried had no "Quit" menu item - the current version has a non-functional "New..." menu item. Come on developer - please do more testing before release

I'm running 10.4.11 on a PPC Mac, and I can't seem to make a new painting at all. When I open the app, it only shows a tool palette, and selecting "New Painting" from the menu doesn't do anything...?

Runs fine now, I can create new paintings and draw perfectly.

Except some of the text is white-on-gray, which is pretty hard to read. I'm guessing it has something to do with Leopard's HUD windows?

Okay... I launched iPaint (version 1.3) and it told me to update to version "1.3 10 27" so I did. Here's the problem: this new version of iPaint is Intel only. Developer, please undo whatever you did in this last update. Btw, I think the 3 updates in one day is pretty cool. :)

Ok I'm sorry that I made it intel only. I know what I did wrong. I built/compiled on 10.4 intel settings. It might be the HUD windows that are doing it or when I compiled it. Would it be possible for someone on mac os x 10.4 and PPC to be a tester for me? If you want email me at tedolinar@me.com

Ok I fixed the problem. Download the 1.1 version and it will update to 1.4. It should be Universal now.
