As the name implies, SketchBook Pro is literally the digital interpretation of the classic sketchbook. Originally launched in conjunction with the introduction of the Tablet PC, it has always been designed specifically for pen-based interaction. Featuring a streamlined user interface geared to maximizing "flow", the product boasts an environment where new users can become productive within minutes.
What's New
Version 4.1.2 (R1 SP2):
  • When the window is resized, it may appear black. If you move the window so most of it is off the visible part of your monitor, then back, the issue is corrected.
  • Undo - If the number of undos is changed in the preferences, there is no effect until a new document it created. It is recommended that you restart SketchBook.
  • Texture Brush - The Shape + Color Texture Brush applies paint anywhere on a layer, even areas with transparency locked. The pixels in transparency locked areas are set to remain transparent, so paint cannot be added to them; however, the Shape + Color Texture Brush does not respect this.
  • Note The Shape Texture Brush does not have this problem.
  • Non-proportional Scale and Rotate - These transforms cannot be combined. If you need to do this combination, follow these steps; otherwise, there could be adverse results:

    1. Non-proportionally scale a selection.
    2. Deselect the selected object.
    3. Make a new selection and rotate it.

  • Rotate Canvas - Use the [ and ] or 9 and 0 hotkeys to rotate the canvas counterclockwise and clockwise, respectively, by 10 degree increments. Note that on Wacom Intuos 4 tablets, you must manually map these hotkeys to the Intuos 4 ring in the Wacom Tablet Properties window.
  • Rotate Canvas and Zoom - The Wacom touch strip uses the current cursor position as the point it zooms from. However, when using Rotate Canvas, if you must use Zoom, be aware that the current cursor position will not be used for the zoom point.
  • Symmetry - When you have been using Symmetry and try to resize the canvas, the line of symmetry can be thrown off center. Creating a new layer sometimes corrects this; however, if it doesn't, you will need to restart SketchBook.
It is recommended that you restart more...

And another thing, unlike every other Mac application out there, Sketchbook can only open one image at a time. If you want to look at two Sketchbook creations side by side then you'll need another different application to do that. As near as I can tell, the only thing this software has going for it is that it is the best out there that I've found for producing smoothly antialiased artwork.

As far as scribbling and painting is concerned, this is an OK tool. However, I'm way frustrated at the lack of some bog-simple features. I drew some random squiggle and then decided I wanted it to be a different color. I selected it and ... you can't change the color! As previously reported in the MacUpdate reviews, there is no way to draw any kind of rectangle. There is a way to draw ovals, but it's pretty obtuse and no other kind of shape at all is supported. I also had the desire to drop down some text on my freehand technical drawing sketch but there is no way to enter text! I get that it'll be converted to pixels and not editable afterwards, but still... I suppose this is good provided you are ONLY sketching and don't ever want to change the color (or line thickness etc) after you've lifted the pen and seen what you've got. If you're expecting any kind of conventional drawing package features such as shapes etc. then you're out of luck.

I also wasn't that impressed with it's 'lagoon' toolbar. I thought it took up a lot of real estate for what it was. I called Autodesk's customer support with a couple questions and they just told me to go to the forums. So I went to the SketchBook forums to pose my questions. Aside from the administrator's first post in June 2010 (it's the end of August 2010 now) there wasn't a single post. Useless.

I know there are SketchBook fans here and they'll probably bag this review, but I'm sticking with my opinion...

I've been a SBP user since version 2. I was really glad to see the release of 2009 when it hit. But hard to explain my excitement when I got my hands on the latest 2010 release.

The new tools make the sketching process much more precise without being overbearing. Ellipse? How did I live without that. The controls are clean and intuitive and it performs better than I would have thought. Straight edge is also a clutch addition, as now more than just my horz/vert lines will be perfectly straight.

I've also been using Alias for a couple years now, and seeing the texture brush added to this low cost app, is almost unreal. My custom brush library is getting ridiculous.

It's official. SBP 2010 is my only sketch book. (Weird to say after so many years of remaining loyal to the #2 HB.)

Sketchbook Pro (SBP) kicks major butt. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a digital newbie, the simple-to-use interface will have you up and drawing in 10 minutes. Let's see you do that with Photoshop! One other reviewer suggested that ArtRage was cheaper so you should buy that. I disagree. ArtRage is a fine tool but all it does is paint. Anyone who can paint can draw but not everyone who can draw can paint so I would suggest that you get SBP instead because it allows you to draw and paint. ArtRage's pencil tool is terrible whereas SBP's pencil tool is without a doubt the closest thing to the real lead and rubber original you will find on the market. Painter, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Artrage, Twisted Pixel and any other graphics app out there can't do pencil well. The only other one that comes close is Scribble and that's not advanced enough to warrant using it professionally.

SBP does it right out of the box... and the new version is even better than the previous versions because it now has a ruler and an ellipse tool as well as custom brushes with which you can create textures to draw with and save.

All in all if you want to create amazing art with your computer look no further than Sketchbook Pro 2010. It's easy to use, robust and I dare you not to fall in love with it's interface.

This is without a doubt (IMO), the closest you can get to drawing with a pencil on the computer. Since Autodesk revived Sketchbook Pro, they've added some amazing tools and honed the compatibility with files like psd. Coupled with a good tablet/tablet PC, you can't go wrong. Excellent software. Highly recommended.

Ever since R1 in version 2009, Autodesk has changed the licensing system back to the classic serial number. I find that much appealing because you don't have to deal with all the registration stuff, and find yourself lost in the mist of all that junk.

This preview version is awesome. They certainly took into consideration alot of what a digital artists needs. All the new improvements and the high quality line strokes helps to create an awesome illustration.

I was really tempted to buy this program. I bought ArtRage instead, for the following reasons.

1. Most important to me, Sketchbook Pro uses a network-based phone home system to register software keys. That means you need Autodesk's permission to install the software; your computer contacts their servers over the network and ties the key to your specific computer so you can't install it anywhere else. If you change computers a lot as I do, that simply won't work. Not only that, it invades my privacy and it's just rude to treat paying customers like thieves.

Let's not forget that pirates will not have to worry about this copy-protection. They have cracked it. It overwhelmingly penalizes and alienates paying, good customers, with no valuable return to Autodesk.

2. I didn't see a way to draw simple shapes like a square or an oval. What's up with that? I would expect a sketch program to support basic shapes and stencils. ArtRage does. (Feel free to correct me if I am wrong on this point, I didn't do an exhaustive survey, but with some effort, I couldn't find simple shapes.) Also, where is the text tool? I'm sure there must be one somewhere and I'm just missing it, but obviously my efforts could not reveal that feature either.

3. The program costs four times more than ArtRage.

Having said all that, the program per se is not bad. It's got a good selection of brushes and drawing tools. I'd have to say as a program per se it is flawed, but quite good nevertheless. But given its offensive copy protection, its lack of some basic features, and its much higher cost compared to the competition, I simply cannot recommend it.

By the way, if your needs are very simple, you might try Scribble. If you need real power, that app is not for you, but if you just want to do some simple drawings, it might be great.
