Well, I took the plunge and installed V2.8.1 on my MacBook Pro. My Brother HL-5370DW, which would not print two sided after the last update until I reinstalled the older driver, is working okay under this update, I very relived to say. My Brother HL-5280DW printer is at home and I'll try that tonight, but I am encouraged by what happened today.
I had thought my HL-4070CDW was defective until I read these reviews. Courtesy of all these suggestions, I went to brother.com and downloaded not only the drivers but also discovered there is a firmware update for my printer. Zero stars to Apple for the printing nightmares I've been encountering but a solid 5 stars to you reviewers who pointed me in the right direction. My computer setup is often used for ministerial support and my Pastor greatly appreciates it when someone finds a low/no cost answer to a problem. In his words God Bless you all!
I suspect the 2.8 update was enough of an ordeal that many of will simply skip this update, especially since the terse release notes make no mention of fixing the duplex fiasco.
I downloaded and installed the Brother driver for my HL-5150D, then deleted printer in the Print & Fax/Options and Supplies/Driver, but I think I keep getting the bad, non-duplex, Apple driver. How do I navigate to the newly downloaded Brother driver?
None of these suggestions worked for me. I had to delete printer, reinstall and choose other for "print using" cue. Then selected my printer (MFC DN8660) driver manually (using a "CUPS" file). But after that printer worked again. Would not "find" software from Apple site.
I called Apple and was told (basically): Brother provides Apple the drivers, and Apple passes those drivers on via Software Update.
If you find the UPDATED troubled drivers on Brother's site, you will see that they are now version: "Version 4.1.0"
With the following note:
"Corrects the issue of being unable to do 2-sided (duplex) print. (Only for machines supporting 2-sided (duplex) print)"
Brother needs to get this updated driver pushed to Apple ASAP. Not everyone is tech savvy and rely on Software Update from not breaking things.
I'm giving low ratings because of Brother's slow response time pushing this out to Apple. Apple posted the drivers on 12/13, Brother had updated drivers on 12/20.
Avoid the Apple Brother Printer Update coming via Software Update! My HL-2030 and HL-2035 didn't print anymore with the same symptoms other reviewers reported here. Solution is going to the Brother website (Brother Solutions Center) and download the driver from there. Install on your Mac and it should work again. It did for me!
This low rated review is only for the bad Apple printer drivers, not for the excellent Brother drivers from the Brother website!
Praise the Lord for Macupdate and the great solutions to this problem which I found here!
The Apple Brother Printer Driver 2.8 comes from Brother through Apple. It has been causing problems with two-sided printing. The "FIX" requires going to the Brother website and downloading and installing brxlaserX6_410.dmg. My rating is for the Apple Brother Printer Software and not the software gotten directly from Brother.
All is now again well with my HL-5250DN. Big Brother has posted an update, V4.1.0 released on 12/20/2011. Go to Brother Solutions Center, find the downloads for OS X 10.7 and download and install V4.1.0. Worked for me!
We lost duplex ability on our main Brother HL-5280DW laser printer after this update (as everyone apparently did).
If you do/did install it, the fix is easy: Go to the Brother site, download the driver software for your printer and OS, install it. (I deleted the Brother laser printer before I installed the Brother driver, but others had reported success without performing this step.)
Then, just add your printer in the System Preferences "Print & Scan" pane. All will be well.
Do not allow Software Update to install 2.8 again ...from reports, it will try to do so.

I have Software Update set to check Daily for new updates. After recovering from the 2.8 broken update two days ago, I was pleased Software Update didn't suggest it yesterday.
But Software Update just popped up its "New software" alert. I always Show Details -- the Brother 2.8 update is back.
I deleted this update, with some concern I won't be notified of future Brother updates.
