- Perian required. QuickTime native AVi importer is completely broken.
- No DivX decoder.component. It overrides Perian's AVI import feature.
- No B frame (or uncheck frame reordering). AVI container's B frame hack is crappy.
This is because AVI requires media compressor component like xvidEncoder, to emit stream in "Packed bitstream" format. It is ugly hack, so it easily loses compatibility with most container other than AVI.
That is the reason why I say xvidEncoder is incompatible with AVI.
I hope everyone uses MP4 container instead of AVI.

Under Known Issues for the latest release of xvidEncoder 1.2.21 (Last Update: 2011/02/26):
* Incompatible with MPEG Streamclip's AVI export feature, including "Save as AVI.component".

Though, when I open the resulting file in QT player/Perian, the Inspector window says 'DivX 5 (Perian).' VideoSpec says 'MPEG-4 DivX v.5', and VLC doesn't give any details. (The commercial DivX codec is not installed.)
The MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2 User's Guide also claims «Added compatibility with xvidEncoder, and fixed a preview issue with x264Encoder and mp4vEncoder.»
That short note on the developer's site might simply be outdated.
