It allows me to connect to US TV sites, e.g..AMC The waking dead site & watch trailers & episodes I otherwise could not access.

Anybody who contemplates using this or a similar service should understand what it does.

It sets up an encrypted tunnel between your Mac and the vendor's server. All network traffic that passes through that tunnel is safe from eavesdropping or tampering -- at least, it is if the product works as advertised, which I haven't verified.

The advantage is that if you're using a public WiFi hotspot, others on the same hotspot won't be able to sniff your traffic, as they otherwise might be. So you don't have to trust random strangers, or a person who might be following you.

On the other hand, you do have to trust the operators of this service. They see all your network traffic, and of course, they know your identity. It's no more information than your ISP gets when you connect from home or work, but it's no less either. You might or might not be less inclined to trust this small outfit than a big corporation.

Here is what I don't get...

It says create a VPN between your laptop and your wireless router...if first you have to connect to HotSpot Shield to create the VPN, how is this done without being connected to your wireless router? Does it disconnect and reconnect you once the VPN is established...it can't do this without breaking the connection.

If this is just routing through an external VPN, what is the backbone connected to the Anchorfree network, can it handle my bandwidth usage and everyone else's too?

But seriously...if you have to connect HS before associating to your wireless router, how can this possibly be done without breaking the connection you already have to your wireless router?

Something just isn't adding up.

WPA2 already encrypts traffic between your laptop and your wireless router. This is a huge waste of time, and misleading for those who do not know any better.

It appears that the MacUpdate description is wrong, because if you go to the developer site, you learn that HotSpot Shield works like other similar services: The connection that's secured is not the one between your laptop and the wireless router, but between your laptop and their central Internet gateway, which lets you bypass network sniffers at any point in between, such as your router or your ISP.

Once you understand how it really works, it's obvious that this is -not- the same as WPA encryption between your router and your laptop. Best example? I use a similar service (not HotSpot Shield) any time I take my laptop away from home, because I can never assume that all users on free wifi networks are friendly. With a VPN like this, you can be safe no matter whose network you join with your laptop. Home is the place this is least useful, everywhere else is where I find it mandatory. I even use the VPN service for my smartphone, which is now by far the most vulnerable of anyone's devices given the lack of control over security.

The only thing misleading here is the way the service is described by whoever wrote the description. The vendor's description on their own site is more accurate.

NeutralZone: What 'other' similar service are you using? And what VPN service on you using on your smartphone? Thanks.

@deBare: I am using Witopia's SSL VPN option for Mac and PPTP VPN option for iPhone. Not free, but can be written off as a business expense.

The ads make it incredibly annoying to use. Since it's free, I probably shouldn't complain, but then again, Tor is a better alternative.
