At first it sounded like a good idea because I have many HD movies in .mkv format, and have been toying with the idea of finding a way to watch them on my AppleTV without going through the hassle of converting 200+ movies (and not having to use Plex on my hacked AppleTV 2); but after reading the Support page, the reference files can only be seen on your computer. The next viable option would be to convert them to iTunes, which brings me back to square one.

I read it uses Handbrake to make the conversion to iTunes, which is pretty good, but if you are planning from the get go to convert your files to iTunes to have them played on iTunes, AppleTV, iPhone, or iPad-maybe I am missing something here-but, why pay 10 bucks (or 20) for an app that relies on an already free app to make the conversion? Why not download Handbrake (which is free), set it to any of the AppleTV, iPhone or iPad preset of your choice, add your videos to the queue and let Handbrake work its magic?

Again, I apologize if I missed something, but I believe the title is a little misleading.

Thank you for your feedback. We definitely don't want to be misleading. With VideoDrive, you can put any video in iTunes with or without reconverting them. But if you want to watch incompatible videos on your iPhone or AppleTV with the default Apple apps you will have to reconvert. There's no way around this and there most likely never will be. We hope the GUI is clear on this: if you import without conversion, the indicator lights for iOS devices remain red.

Also, VideoDrive brings more to the table than conversion. There's metadata tagging, hot folders, support for Elgato hardware, silent queuing, metadata presets for repeated tagging of TV shows, automatic season and episode numbering, etc.

We encourage everyone to try-out the trial version first and only purchase if you're convinced VideoDrive can help in your workflow of organizing and watching videos in the iTunes ecosystem.

I have the same problem. The description is not well done because it gave me the wrong impression that I could watch movies in any format on my Apple TV without having to convert them. I bought the software yesterday, but actually I don't need it. I will ask the Aroona Software to be refund.

Great update with version 2.6: new interface with red/green lights that indicate where your videos will play. Also supports the new iPad and appleTV. Still use this tool weekly to fill my iPad.

The summary description says "Add movies to iTunes without converting them", while the full description seems to contradict it with "Advanced conversion settings, including support for QuickTime X, Elgato.264 HD and HandBrake". Maybe the former needs updating to something like "Add movies to iTunes, with optional conversion"?

This new version is a serious improvement for video conversions. Previously, the user interface would be become unresponsive on Lion, but this seems to be fixed now:). This app really shines when it comes to batch processing large numbers of videos.

I have some MKV movies from 7GB to 11GB. As I bought an apple TV I would love to see these movies on my tv. I am trying hard to find some software to get help!
Don't try Videodrive, it is a waste of time. You will see that it would take around 200 hours to convert. If you pass these 200 hours without a crash then you're fine! I did not have this luck.
Today in 2011 I expect that converting a video should not be such a big deal. for me it definitely is!

all you need is vlc(vide lag client) totally free and BEST player for any type of media format for macs and to enable the stream to apple tv option. also you could buy a simple wire that combines the audio and video out of the headphone port of a mac and at the other end has red white and yellow wires. you simply plug the colored wires into the same colored video and audio inputs on your tv and change the tv to aux 1 or 2,whichever you plugged them into. press play on your mac and done! beautiful blu ray or whatever is playing on your mac,is now on your tv. free! no need for apple tv ever! waste of money

Nice update, it now supports video conversions using HandBrake. Very fast. Had one crash but it seems to be in beta.

Before I used method 4 to create non-converted copies of my videos for my hacked white AppleTV. For christmas I got a black AppleTV, so now I'm using method 6 which converts videos. So, this HandBrake support is a welcome upgrade.

Happy to see this is still being actively developed. Metadata was broken recently and within a few days an update was released, which is nice.

Short review: Importing videos is very fast (with the default settings), but the amount of metadata added to shows is not that extensive. It's getting everything from IMDb which is great for movies, but not always for TV Shows. The quality of the covers has gone up in recent versions so that's a bonus. All in all, still a happy user.

I've reviewed this app in the past and i gave it a high rating. After using for 6 months, I regret buying it. I planned to use it for tagging downloaded TV Shows and movies. For the movies part, it does fill the metadata correctly, but for TV shows, it's quite a mess. I've tried to contact the developer to fix these issues but they remain unresolved. Point in case, the American Dad TV Show, take a look:

So, if you want to automatically tag TV shows, steer clear of this one.

It appears that the episode you refer to is not Season 1, Episode 8, but rather Season 2, Episode 1. As a result, it's impossible for VideoDrive to get this one right.

However, we will issue an update where VideoDrive will take the episode name from the file name if no online episode name can be found. In this particular case, the name will be "8 - Bullocks to Stan" rather than simply "8". Also note that you can choose any prefix in Preferences so that the name can for instance be "Episode 8".

VideoDrive has still strickly to be located in the applications folder.
Otherwise you get that annoying anouncment.
More: You won't even be able to set your registration key.

Actually, VideoDrive does not require to be located in the Applications folder. The behaviour you describe is a bug. We are working to address it in a next release. Please email more details (aroonasoftware@gmail.com)

There are no plans to release a multilingual version in the immediate version as we want to add more features first.
