I'd love to give this 5 stars, I use it quite frequently and it's not only best in class, it's the only one in its class. I wish it were more reliable, less of a system hog, and less expensive. But its accuracy is seeing huge improvements and it gets better with each release - you can't say that about too many apps, sadly, and if you have hand pain and/or write a lot Dragon, for all its flaws, will improve your workflow significantly.

I use it on a Macbook Air and whilst it sometimes crashes and may be temperamental reopening, it has saved me a lot of time doing reports and has increased my productivity significantly. I wish I hadn't procrastinated for so long about getting it, but the reviews had been so mixed. it amazing to watch the text come up without having to type it and I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to buy it again

I paid $62.44 for an upgrade right before MacSpeech Inc. sold MacSpeech Dictate to Nuance, then Nuance wants me to upgrade again for 100 dollars. Bringing my total investment in MacSpeech to $362.44! This is robbery and deception, from both companies.I Hope there's an alternative soon and Nuance is shut down! The software is barely satisfactory, and damn sure not worth $362.44, I would say $50.00 at the most!

This review is over all and not restricted to version 2.5.2... About 6 months of use has me well pleased. And being able to use my iPhone as a mic to dictate with is quick and easy... Then also using a bluetooth headset (an old one I used to use with my iPhone) provides me with cordless and hands free dictation.

It took me an hour or so to train it for my voice initially. That wasn't difficult to do.

They've treated Mac users like an unwanted stepchild for too long. I can't wait for Apple to bring Siri to the Mac computers from iPhone and watch the folks from Dragon Dictate crap themselves.

I get what you're saying. But Nopczone is right. Nuance has quite a dictatorship on the voice-recognition market. Apple relaying on them for Siri doesn't improve the situation. I wish there was more competition. And I wish I could tell my mac "scroll down" when I'm laying back and reading a webpage.

Nopczone, it's true that Apple "secretly" utilizes Nuance tech to some degree. But, the difference is Siri works fairly effortlessly while Dragon Dictate has a history of causing Mac users headaches.

I don't know, maybe Apple should just buy Nuance out entirely at this point since there's not much competition out there anyway...

I would like to confirm what others have written about Nuance's terrible customer support...

Today I wanted to install Dragon Dictate 2.5 on my new MacBook Pro. Normally all this would entail is logging-in at the product website and clicking a download link. But apparently when I purchased my upgrade it was through Digital River, not Nuance, so the Nuance website did not have a record of my purchase and i could not locate an e-mail confirming my purchase. (Normally I am very good about saving this kind of thing but unfortunately I cannot find it among all my software registration information.)

Fortunately, my 2.0 license key works with 2.5 even though the Nuance website only lists 2.0 under the license. A customer service rep informed me that the 2.0 license will work fine with 2.5 but it isn't noted on their website.

So I called Nuance. Over the course of 1+ hours I dealt with four different customer service reps and was given at least two toll-free numbers to call. There were long wait times before I was connected to a rep. I was also disconnected during one call...

Two of the reps were no help at all and dealing with them was made more difficult because apparently I was connected to an Indian call center with a poor connection and reps with thick accents.

I was finally able to obtain my order number but I was told to call Digital River since the upgrade had apparently been ordered through them. But when I spoke with Digital River I was told that since my free download period had expired I would have to either buy a physical DVD or pay a fee to extend my download accessibility. When I complained about this policy the rep offered to send me a download link as a courtesy to me.

That was nice of the rep, except for one thing: the e-mail never arrived. Considering the trouble we had communicating (I had to repeat my order number three times...) it's quite possible that she did not write down my e-mail correctly.

I finally did what another reviewer said that he wound up doing: I copied Dragon Dictate to my MBP as well as the Dragon folder from My Home Folder/Library/Application Support. The Dragon folder contains the license file as well as profiles, etc. and Dragon is now installed on my MBP.

I am usually very patient with customer service reps and I have had positive experiences working with customer service based in India. But Nuance's poor customer service and lack of easy license access for existing customers is the worse I have ever experienced and it is simply inexcusable in 2011.

I cannot say anything about the actual usability of Dragon Dictate because I haven't done much with it previously. However, based on my experience with Nuance customer support, it will really have to shine before I will consider upgrading in the future.

I hope that someone at Nuance takes the time to read comments at MacUpdate because the company really needs to improve the way it handles its current customers...

Be aware that, unlike its PC counterpart Dragon Naturally Speaking, Dragon Dictate for Mac does NOT support using digital voice recorders to capture your speech for dictating while on the go. This is, for me, a deal breaker. Sadly, this major omission is not made at all obvious in their marketing. Indeed, given that the PC version has had this feature for years, it is too easy to make the assumption that the Mac version would include the same significant functionality. Nope.

Dragon does still sell Macspeech Scribe, a separate product designed ONLY for working with digital voice recorders. However, that is ALL it does, is a separate non-integrated application, costs $150 on its own, is not compatible with Lion, and having not been updated in any way in over 15 months appears to be a dead end product.

I'm dictating the current review with Dragon Dictate. After using it for months now my experience with it is mixed. Sometimes it works pretty well and other times not at all. It really depends in which application you use it and if not used in the Dragon Dictate window it can slow your computer down dramatically. Another problem is that it often inserts singer capita characters especially after line breaks. Also even after training for certain words it will just not work even though in my eyes they are quite different.

The commanding, correcting of text is not very intuitive and again often have struggled to recognise what you wanted to correct. I think there should be shortcuts for these. Overall it's kind of usable but I still always need the keyboard to correct and 666 for example right now reckon will not recognise fix but even after training insists it's the number 6.

While this is NOT a product that I would give a glowing recommendation to it IS the ONLY speech recognition software available for the Mac that includes dictation capability. So if you want this feature it is your only choice so far as I am aware of. When it works it works well but stability does not seem to be one of its best features. The interface has not changed in years but finally, many years after its initial release of MacSpeech Dictate, they seem to have fixed the issue that too many items in your address book causes the program to freeze unless you disable this function. Correcting errors is still a pain, at least until you get really proficient at it. Printed documentation is almost nonexistent. Their 5x7 printed list of commands barely scratches the surface of all the commands that are available. The product offers no way to printout its full command list from the program. There is no consistent separation between User Commands and Built-In Commands in the command editor. As others have pointed out, tech support generally seems to be abismal , This however seems to be Nuances history, which judging from the comments has not significantly improved if at all.

So the bottom line is that if you want a dictation program for the Mac, this is probably your only choice, and why you experience is probably the best you will get - at least for now. As for technical support you should be desperate and have the patience of a Saint before even thinking of trying to obtain it.

Hey Guys,

The problem isn't with Speed Download but you're uncovering it with Speed Download.

Some merchants (very few) limit the amount of times you can download software from their servers. Why they do this is beyond me because most of the time, you've actually purchased it. Maybe they're saving on bandwidth..who knows.

By default, Speed Download is a turbo-charged download manager that will always try to give you the fastest possible download speed based on your ISP's bandwidth. It does this by using segmented downloading. What that means is that is opens up several connections to the same server in order get that file at the fastest speed. This is no secret. It's the way Speed Download has always functioned; it's the way it was DESIGNED to function, and one of the main reasons tons of people use it everyday.

The affected merchants' server are seeing multiple connections coming from your IP address when you're downloading using SD. In fact, what they're actually seeing is segmented downloading in action. You're not actually downloading the file many times; but their servers sees it as such.

Many years back, we've taken that into consideration and accounted for it. All you have to do, is right click on the file's entry in SD (if you've already tried to download it), and from the CMM, choose 'Add to Sensitive Servers'. What this does, is tell SD to only use ONE connection when downloading from that server. In this case, it's no different from your browser.

If you know that a specific server is going to limit you in that sense, you can also prepare SD for it. Simply go into the SD preferences, and into the SENSITIVE SERVERS section, and add that server's domain in there. Nothing more to it.

Of course, all this stuff is in the documentation, but hey, who reads that stuff, right? ;-)

If you have any questions, I'm happy to assist you. Email me at info at yazsoft dot com

I apologize for any inconvenience your experience with this file may have caused, and I hope the above explanation makes sense.

Speed Download is an extremely efficient and reliable download manager. I test it every single day to make sure it stays that way.

Kind regards,

Johnny

I didn't think the lack of support documentation would be a problem. Well, it is, as the program beachballs every time I try to set up a profile. So I'm out of commission until Support gets back to me. I'm worried, because I've heard that MacSpeech's support is mediocre at best. We'll see...
