avast! Antivirus Mac Edition... The avast! multi-award winning technology is now available on the Mac platform to protect both your Mac and your Windows PC using friends and co-workers from the lastest malware threats.

Winner of both the European AND US best anti-virus product, as well as winning the European best anti-malware category outright in last year's coveted SC Awards, avast! technologies can now be deployed to make your Mac safer against the ever-increasing malware threats being deployed against the platform, and in stopping malware threats being passed on to PC's
What's New
Version 1.0:

This is version 1.0 of the latest beta.

Features:

  • On-demand scanning: It's possible to scan the whole file system, network volumes or a mounted removable volume. You can also run a custom scan. Scan reports are automatically archived and are accessible from the GUI at anytime.
  • On-screen alerts: Alert messages are displayed on-screen whenever a threat is detected.
  • File Shield: The File Shield scans the binaries of started applications and all files at the time they are modified.
  • Web Shield: The Web Shield monitors and filters all HTTP traffic coming from web sites on the Internet. Connections from your web browser are redirected to the Web Shield module. The Web Shield in turn connects to the requested web server and while downloading the content, it simultaneously scans it for viruses and Trojans. Only clean data is delivered to the browser, all malware is stopped before it gets saved on your Mac.
  • Mail Shield: The Mail Shield monitors and filters all POP3 and IMAP traffic coming from mail servers on the internet. It does not prevent saving of infected files (doing so could lead to irreversible data loss), it just detects them. The File Shield prevents any infected attachments from causing harm to your system.
  • Automatic updates: The scanning engine is automatically updated with our regular VPS database updates.

Known Issues:

  • Drag and drop functionality on the Dock icon is not available when the GUI is not running.
  • Some of the avast! windows aren't automatically activated during application start-up and may be hidden behind other application windows.
  • Sometimes Apple's default icon is shown in the Dock and Finder instead of the avast! icon.
  • The Growl framework (http://growl.info) is necessary for the pop-up alert functionality. We recommend installing Growl before installing avast!
  • Some items in the menus and some buttons in the GUI are greyed out / disabled as their functionality is not yet fully implemented.

Installation & Uninstallation:

  • To use the Mail Shield, you need to disable encrypted POP3/IMAP connections in your email client's settings so the traffic can be scanned. By default, the Mail Shield encrypts all outgoing traffic itself if the mail server supports it (encrypted connections can be forced for selected mail accounts in the Mail Shield settings).
  • Uninstallation must be carried out from the application's menu bar - item "Uninstall avast!"

I tried the mac version soem 2-3 years ago, and got a serious problem: it harmed my mac (no idea whether it found something, but I had to reinstall, fortunately could do that). The authors admitted the problem, but—nothing followed. I would have accepted a kind of ‘thanks for your feedback’ or anything similar, as usual in the civilized world. Its authors cultivate a kind of arrogance, perhaps considering that a good feedback is something normal.
I cannot judge this version, but I warn potential users on the possible problems with avast. Maybe I am wrong, and maybe I misjudged their reaction. So, before tsting avast!, do make a daily backup copy and be prepared for serious things.

Avast has an outstanding free version for Windows.

As there are existing proven free alternatives (ClamXav and Sophos) for the Mac, I see absolutely no reason to get into a subscription fee BETA.

Actually this is the Beta version of the free version that they are planning to release once it goes finial. So they are planning to release a free version for the Mac just as they do for Windows.

@Revan:
I would call "free version" good news. What is your information source? I see nothing that even hints at that on their web page.

(side note: I had to use an alternative browser to get around their website --- not Safari5x friendly. That solidifies the BETA concerns in my own mind)

If you carefully read the developer's description above, you probably already know that only an absolute fool would believe anything s/he says.

Seriously, I wouldn't touch this app with a ten foot pole.

Quite an impressive product description by the company. However, I also found problems with e-mail. I have to use Windoze at work and test-ran this app for a while when I was looking for a reliable AV app. Even on Windoze, it causes conflicts with e-mail and certain other apps which it blocks from launching.
In spite of this, it's a good-looking app - nice GUI - but a shame the product description doesn't live up to it's actual performance.
And, it was a pain to uninstall !

avast for Mac Edition keeps crashing when I scan the entire HD.
Also, find it impossible to find any documentation on how to uninstall it.

In general, in the Windows world Grisofts AVG found at least 6 more infections on our office machines than Avast did.

For Mac, I was looking for an AV that scans the single biggest source of infection: e-mails. I do forward e-mails, so passing on Windows infections is a possibility. Avast plugs into your Mail.app and launches it. If you uncheck the mail option in the preferences, no mail scanning seems to be happening. Apart from my preference to launch my e-mail software at my leisure, Avast completely ignores the fact that many people do not use Mail.app, but things like Thunderbird, PowerMail, Entourage, et al.

So, in terms of what I really wanted to have, e-mail scanning, it does not perform as expected.

The HD scans are fast and thorough, no complaints about that. No crashes or hanging on OS X 10.4.11.

I have the same experience.
It somehow removed my Mail index and prompted me to rebuid the whole index for over 12000 emails.

While it's got an easy to use UI and seems to be quite thorough(I ran it but no "cooties" were found on my hard drive), be aware that Avast Antivirus is not for purchase; you buy a license to use it for one, two or three years at a time.
Currently, a one year license costs $40, a two year license costs $58 and it's $74 for three years.
The Avast company is Czech, and heretofore has sold most of their software to European buyers, so most likely, their antivirus software licenses will become more and more costly for those of us in the States as the dollar vis a vis the Euro loses value.
So Avast Antivirus is quite expensive to use, especially if one expects to use it for a number of years.
One irksome fact is that their antivirus software for Windows(their home edition used non-commercially, has FREE yearly licenses, while we Mac users have to pay for them! Most puzzling, since Windows is just plagued with viruses/malware while there are, as yet, NO active ones out there for Mac.
I, for one, will pass on this one; I'll just continue to use the free and highly regarded ClamXav.

Downloaded avast! -that I already knew from the Windows platform - yesterday and scanned my Mail- and Downloadfolders. avast! found eight infected files, all .exe files. Looks as a real Mac-program and I liked the built-in manual. Seems to work rather quickly.

I have my parents PC using Avast anti-virus, it works well and is completely FREE for home use.

Where's the FREE home use for the Mac users?
