Avast is great on Windows but on my Mac it was so obtrusive, asking me for every connection (disabled due to Little Snitch) and warning me my mail was encrypted (which I couldn't find a work around). In the end I uninstalled Avast after one day of non-stop nuisance pop-ups. They need to make it work more seamlessly and less obtrusively (e.g. it needs to be more intelligent).

I just downloaded Avast about 30 minutes ago — and it created one of the most awful experiences I've had on my 2011 iMac.

I installed it — and its components — and it took over my machine with dozens of items spread everywhere. I played hell trying to delete the entire mess, which I finally did.

I did not like that it took over my machine, so to speak. No wonder it tells you that it will not function if you have any other anti-virus software installed.

I'm going back to ClamXav and/or Sophos.

Be warned — this can cause serious problems.

I've used the Windows version for some time without problems including an install via Parallels on this Mac, so I was curious to try this out on OS X.

To my surprise it turned my 8 Core Mac Pro with 32 gigs of Ram into a horribly slow, unresponsive mess with frequent spinning ball and that doesn't happen even when I'm running several resource hungry apps like Photoshop and Lightroom at the same time on heavy tasks.

I looked inside the activity monitor for clues but couldn't see anything obviously wrong, yet it was patently clear from the sudden slow down while Avast was running a scan that something was wrong, so I uninstalled it and normal service resumed. I've not seen problems like this in the past when trying Sophos or Clamav.

Well, no slowdowns or other problems experienced here on my older Core 2 duo Macbook pro w/a mere 2 GIGs of RAM.
Same for Sophos.

I switched to this from Sophos and I am looking forward to some of the added features. However I am having an issue installing the Chrome Extension with the latest beta of this software.

Is this a known issue or am I the only one?

Not trying to advocate antivirus programs on the Mac but if you're the paranoid type then this is the best option for you. It's light on system resources and is very accurate at detecting malware. I can't give it 5 stars as it's still in beta but that can change in the future.

Is this going to be free once it is out of beta?

Works good so far.

Only nuisance is setting up the mail server proxy to intercept mail traffic. As far as I've seen, Apple Mail has to be set to not use SSL, because the Avast shield does that.

If you don't switch off SSL, you'll end up with numerous on screen warnings.

Hope this has been worked around in the final version.

Yes, I've tried asking about that, but not fixed as of yet. And I'm *not* switching off SSL or any other encryption to make Avast! happy. : ) However, the detection engine is still one of -- if not *the*-- fastest available, and highly accurate. Continue to provide feedback to the devs -- I'm sure we'll get some favorable changes.

I tried the mac version soem 2-3 years ago, and got a serious problem: it harmed my mac (no idea whether it found something, but I had to reinstall, fortunately could do that). The authors admitted the problem, but—nothing followed. I would have accepted a kind of ‘thanks for your feedback’ or anything similar, as usual in the civilized world. Its authors cultivate a kind of arrogance, perhaps considering that a good feedback is something normal.
I cannot judge this version, but I warn potential users on the possible problems with avast. Maybe I am wrong, and maybe I misjudged their reaction. So, before tsting avast!, do make a daily backup copy and be prepared for serious things.

The Mac version of several years ago (the obscenely expensive Mac version) is not the same as this one. This is brand new.

Avast has an outstanding free version for Windows.

As there are existing proven free alternatives (ClamXav and Sophos) for the Mac, I see absolutely no reason to get into a subscription fee BETA.

Actually this is the Beta version of the free version that they are planning to release once it goes finial. So they are planning to release a free version for the Mac just as they do for Windows.

@Revan:
I would call "free version" good news. What is your information source? I see nothing that even hints at that on their web page.

(side note: I had to use an alternative browser to get around their website --- not Safari5x friendly. That solidifies the BETA concerns in my own mind)

If you carefully read the developer's description above, you probably already know that only an absolute fool would believe anything s/he says.

Seriously, I wouldn't touch this app with a ten foot pole.

Please elaborate on what, other than the word 'beta', in the developer's description makes you so averse to using the app. Also, as you might not be aware, Avast! is a highly-regarded antivirus solution for Windows-based machines; just in case you might be thinking it's a new Mac-only app. : )
