Weather Vane is a Mac OS X utility that retrieves your local weather forecast and displays it in the menubar (both U.S. and international locations). Place it in your Login Items, and it will launch when you log in. The current temperature and conditions are displayed in the menu bar. Its menu displays the forecast and the tooltip displays the more detail on current conditions is your area. Weather Vane will fetch your forecast in intervals that you decide (15min.- 6hrs). Runs on both 32 bit and 64 bit systems. Localized for several languages.
Miracles...after a few months of being weatherless and checking back here on a whim and seeing Weather Vane still listed, I've tried it again and it's working! For now? Thank you.
There is a problem with download page (doesn't work), as well as with Weather Vane v. 2.3.2 itself. Suddenly, app doesn't work any more?!
Did the Developer quit? I doubt because home web page is still there! But every other link from that page is not working. Is there a way to find out what is going on?
Weather Vane was a very good and reliable app.
This is from the devs page: "My apologies. I guess success isnt always a good thing. Accuweather says that Weather Vane is hitting their server too often. They receive over 100,000 hits a day for all of the users out there. Assholes! I'll find a new feed and release a new version this weekend. Sorry for the inconvenience." I'm not sure how long that's been there, if it's recent though, that should imply he'll be fixing the issue soon :)
Weather Vane suddenly no longer works for me (on three different Macs). Problem started in 2.3.1 and persists with 2.3.2. Where the usual weather report/temperature appears in the menu there is only a continuous scrolling of "Weather Vane... fetching weather" that never ends. I e-mailed Spike Software about it a week ago and haven't heard a peep :(
I've tried a few similar applications, and this is my favorite so far. The menubar display is clean, simple, and easily customizable, and the drop-down menu provides a lot of information without having to dig through submenus. My only complaints are that the UI isn't as attractive as it could be (of course, that's just a matter of preference), the drop-down menu can seem a bit cluttered (it would be nice to have the option to choose how much info it displays), and a few customization options I'd like to see are missing, such as the ability to choose where the weather data comes from, display the temperature only, without an icon, and choose smaller refresh increments. Those are mostly minor complaints though, and overall, Weather Vane is an excellent application.
Just visit the site directly - www.spikesoft.net - I got that from the referring web address when I tried to visit the developer's site from the link above.
Weather Vane has a concise, easy to read display that makes for quick checks of the weather. I compared it to WeatherDock in Activity Monitor, WeatherDock used 0.2% CPU and Weather Vane used 0.0% (obviously these readings were inbetween weather updates).
And as an added bonus, it runs as a 64 bit app on my PPC Mac which means we won't have to listen to LIBERTYFORALL1776 complain about it not yet being 64 bit. Thank goodness for small favors!
Version 2.3.1 still doesn't work.
Cannot configure preferences - Edinburgh is the only uk city that shows up.
Still no reply from the developer.

My apologies for not getting back to you directly, but after Accuweather disabled the feed, I was overwhelmed with emails reporting the problem and asking when it would be fixed. I setup an auto-reply message to handle the load, but maybe you never received them. Again my apologies. As for Weather Vane only finding Edinburgh, that may be the case, if so, its a limitation of the feed. I'm not totally satisfied with the data contained in the feed, for example, The Weather Channel does not provide localized forecasts. I'll be looking for another feed moving forward, but for now, I wanted to get Weather Vane back up on its feet asap and TWC's feed allowed me to do that.
Again, ny apologies for the confusion and thanks for using Weather Vane. Regular updates will be posted, probably weekly as I've been receiving some minor bug reports, so keep checking here or the website.

I just did a search for a couple of cities in the UK and Weather Vane found these:
Aberdeen
Dundee
Glasgow
London
Leeds
Manchester
If you're still having trouble finding other UK cities, you might want to delete the preferences file and restart Weather Vane. You can find the preferences in:
/Users//Library/Preferences/net.spikesoft.WeatherVane.plist
Just throw it into the trash, restart and re-enter your location. If that does not work, please send a support email from the website:

If Spike is looking for a new server, he might look into BBC's met service. It's used by many Linux apps.
He could also develop this app in such a way that it doesn't depend on one server.
I wonder why he hasn't implemented a feature in which users may designate a server. Along with this, it would be better if the app didn't freeze up if it can't connect to a server. Meteorologist, for example, just shows the app icon if it can't connect.
Meteorologist, btw, has also had this server problem many times. I switched to Weathervane because, up to now, the weather server there has been reliable.
WV has pooched, again. Displaying "Fetching forecast" and "null, null", the same as last time the feed was disabled by a data provider. Deleting preferences had no effect, and issue exists on three different networks, so assuming it is not a localised issue.
2.3.2 - hover details is not working, and clicking on a day's weather is not loading the Web page, as I believe it used to on versions prior to the change to The Weather Channel feed. Intel iMac, Snow Leopard.
I received this email from the developer this morning.
"Weather Vane's adoption by Mac users has been a very successful over the last four years. So successful that AccuWeather can't handle the load. They receive over 100,000 hits a day from it. They wanted me to pay for the feed, which I cannot/will not do. There are other feeds available and I'll have to retool Weather Vane to use one of them. I hope to have this done by this Sunday, so please be patient and sorry for the inconvenience."
Sent a note to AccuWeather to comment about pulling the plug, suggesting that perhaps a better option would have been to force WV's developer to increase the interval times of pinging their servers, to lessen the loads. If someone needs up-to-minute weather, then maybe pay for that. I wouldn't care if it only got it once or twice a day. I would gladly trade that for the convenience of its nice menubar design. I can use other tools (widgets) to get more timely weather data if I really need it. Hope it gets fixed soon. Thanks Spike!
Accuweather shut down access for this program and it no longer works. I corresponded with the dev, and he is working on an update that will use another source for weather data.
Hi... no, I have not received a response. I wrote an e-mail on their web site, but have not heard anything. This is what I have done on my Mac:
In the menu bar, I chose quit. I then deleted both the application and the preferences for Weather Vane. I then installed a fresh version of it; however, it still reads "Null Null" in the menu bar. I don't know what is happening with them.
I then downloaded another application called "Weather Dock" and installed it. It's a little tricky to set up the preferences on it, but I worked it out. Thus far, it is working fine on my Mac. I set it up to put a desktop icon in the lower right corner of my screen, giving me the weather icon and current temp. Since I have a large monitor, it also appears in my menu bar. You may want to check it out as a possible replacement for Weather Vane, which I still like. If you have any other questions about setting up Weather Dock, should you decide to go with it, I'd be happy to help.

"Yes, accuweather killed the feed due to overuse. I'll find a new feed and release a new version this weekend."
Hope that clears thins up.
Run that program and use it to QUIT the process in question.
