Just to balance out that ridiculous review from Bluestar which has nothing to do with the app itself. This app has been a great mainstay throughout the years on nearly all the computers I've ever owned and I use it every single day without fail ... sure theres been bugs after the version 7 overhaul and implementation but Lemke has been super responsive in fixing everything that comes his way, especially when it comes to his GC Yahoo group.

Can anyone tell me if you can use 3rd party filters, specifically nik's Color Efex Pro (v2) with GC 7?

I support filters which does work as external filters (like in Aperture). Photoshop-Plugins are not supported. Because such plugins do normally require Photoshop as host. A lot of filter manufacturers do publish their filters in both versions.

Not sure why you're dinging Lemke for something he has no control over; servers in this case. Did you try the other 2 mirrors? (took 7 mins using Switch #2)

Frank-O'Connor replied on 04 Nov 2011
There's been a problem with slow mirrors on the LemkeSoft product line for years. It clears up when demand dies off, but during the initial surge it can be painfully slow. Thorsten should look to mirror his product line more widely ... hey, they're good, they're popular so it's not surpising the demand is high at times of new releases.

Part of the service is getting the App and updates to the paying user ... so the review issue is not stupid. You outlay for something ... and I have consistently upgraded GC since version and you expect sophisticated distribution of updates. One can only assume Gaston doesn't update.

Oh come on. All of a sudden (right after upgrading from 7.3.1 to 7.4), the BROWSER no longer properly displays images which were saved with Photoshop Elements:

The entire "right section" is gonzo. I.e., the image data is missing info for size, resolution, format, length and compression. The histogram and the 100% slot are not functional. And the large preview is really ugly (fuzzy). Why? This wasn't the case before.

Files in the same folder which were saved with GraphicConverter display all the above just fine.

Also... the 'Fast Preview' feature (i.e., sorta like QuickLook from within the browser) just stays gray, showing the text 'Loading...' ad infinitum. (again, that's only with Photoshop JPEGs... whereas items saved with GraphicConverter work as expected, as usual).

The only clue in Console is several lines, all of which say:

10/11/11 2:16:40 PM GraphicConverter[644] com.apple.console Error +[NSString stringWithPascalString:]: unrecognized selector sent to class 0xa0031238

Please look into the help menu. There is a troubleshooting tutorial for deleting the application prefs. That should fix it.

Hal Itosis replied on 15 Nov 2011
Hi. So far it seems that version 7.5 has cured the browser problem which 7.4 introduced... so i am quite happy.

As far a "deleting the application prefs" goes, there are two unfortunate issues with that: it's a huge PITA and it only works temporarily.

It's a huge PITA because there are around 30 or 40 changes i make to the "defaults" in order to get GraphicConverter to look and act the way i prefer. (as you know, there are many MANY pref possibilities). Deleting the prefs means i need to go and retweak a whole bunch of of stuff (not just the browser section, but everything). But after all that retweaking, and after some time goes by, version 7.4.x reverted back to the same misbehavior described above.

So far, version 7.5 is doing fine... and i didn't even need to delete the prefs!!! (i.e., my first "test" was to see if it would misbehave while my prefs were already set to what i consider ideal... and it worked out right away).

Let's hope it lasts this time.
And thanks again Thorsten.

Hey Lemke,

Perhaps you've noticed that everyone hates 6.0. It's slow. The interface is a giant step backwards. Worst yet the layers are just BAD (as in they make working in GC awful). I've paid for GC twice (that's how much I loved it). I just want to download 5.9. It worked and it worked great. 6.0 isn't even worth pirating. Give me a 5.0 download.

On my G4 Dual 1GHz the recommended UB after some time of simple usage (just browsing) eats up all my memory (1.25GB) and the system swaps until being no more responsive. The PPC version works just wine. Known problem?

Please: modify the slideshow order "by name" such that the string taken for sorting is the full path to an image plus name, not just the name!

I bought this perhaps more than ten years ago, I believe it was $25 then. Since that time, I've had to pay for only one upgrade. That was maybe two years ago now. I've always found this app to be stable and dependable, and it certainly has been a good value for the money.

This is a very useful program that does many of the same things commercial programs do, but with extremlely useful conversion functions.

But there is this one (possible) bug that I'm having difficulty trying to explain.

I would very much appreciate this if someone can do this test: Open a multi-page tiff (tif) file, and then "Save as" a (multi-page) tiff file with a new name, and then see if your original file is still on your drive.

This is a very simple test, but it requires you to create a multi-page tiff file, which can be done with the "Convert & Modify" menu option in GraphicConverter.

If anyone is curious, "SmartScore," which I use to digitize printed music, works with multi-page tiff files.

Thanks!

I just tried your test, and it indeed deletes the original file. It appears to create two or three temporary files during the save process, which it also deletes.

The same bug happens with "Save a Copy as".

It seems the preference to always open graphics at 100% is broken; even with this set my files frequently open at 24%, 17%, etc. It gets very annoying having to keep hitting Command-= every time.

And don't get me started on the Intel version not importing preferences from the PowerPC version...
