Leap is a combination Spotlight, Bridge, Finder, and more. With the Finder on Leopard you can find that you have over 10,000 documents. Leap shows you all of them, and more importantly - where they are on your computer. No other tool does this. Works great for images, pdfs, too.

I had purchased Leap when it was at version 1, then repurchased v3.0.1 on MAS, even if I'm not a fan of MAS.
The real problem with Leap is that it looks like "abandonware", meaning that a new company purchased Leap and all the other great apps from Ironic just to put them on MAS and make money with no real support to their loyal customers: I see a lot of posts in their support forums (including some of mine) that are left unanswered or, if you are lucky, you get an answer by a guy that is paid to watch these forums and give some answers, but then the reported bug is not fixed or the requested improvement is not implemented.

Unfortunately, I have to add my negative comments. This company is the classic "non-service" company. In the early days, I beta tested, assisted, and enhanced their products. Now, not only do they not answer any communication, they simple charge everyone retail without looking back to those that assisted in their progress. Typical entitlement attitude that will always come back around and result in failure.

My advice is to choose other competing products sooner than later so that the circle completes. Companies, such as this one, need to fail so that the better, more customer oriented succeed.

I like to look before I leap when it comes to software. No free trial means no sale.

I don't know why some developers try to scam people by forcing a non-refundable purchase before giving them a chance to try the software.

For those of you looking for an alternate to Leap [I was a faithful Leap user for years until they decided to go exclusively on the Mac App Store] might I suggest you take a look at Houdah Spot.

HS is an alternative to Spotlight and does a better job of finding meta tags than Spotlight and is quite a bit faster at this than is Leap.

With HS you have the same file-peering capabilities as Leap [different views, Quick Look, etc.] but is lightening fast.

Check it out!

Watch out, this company makes it a policy to abandon long standing users and then charge for simply waiting for them to fix their software (without adding useful features I might add). I have previously spent great deal of buy time trying to work out issues with them but their customer service is one of the worst I've encountered in 20 years as a Mac user. Sometimes lousy customer service trumps buying software.

Leap is so Awesome!!!

I have multiple hard drives with old time machine backups and when I want to find some obscure file form the past Leap does it every time.

Leap is obviously written by developers that have used Mac computers forever because they know exactly what is missing form the Finder to keep a lot of files organized and easy to browse and find when you can't remember where you put them.

They cut the price of Leap in HALF recently to make it available to everyone on the App Store.

Leap is for Mac lovers of all kinds. No bloat, just what you need.

If you just need to manage documents, try Yep. If you want to be able to dig deep into hard drives for anything that might be there... Leap should be your choice.. I own both and they are worth every penny.

Thank you!!!

For those on MacUpdate who seem confused about what Leap actually does or think that it isn't work $29... If you don't like it what it does, why on earth did you buy it? If you don't like it using it, why are would you care about an upgrade price? Are you going to upgrade an application that you don't like?

Nope, I don't work for them, I am a fan though. It's a great application with lots of feature.

It may not be for users that wish computers today were the same as they were 20 years ago. Some users may be confused at first by all the features available, but if you take a few minutes to learn how it works you'll love it.

It's on sale this week in the App Store for $14.99. It's an amazon deal. I paid $59 for it a year ago and it was worth it. I use it everyday.

I bought Leap 3.0 and Fresh 3.0 on the AppStore a couple of days ago. Got the receipt, the apps, the whole shebang. And now, a week later something strange has happened: Fresh tells me that it's beta and has expired and both Fresh and Leap have disappeared from the AppStore. Even from my list of apps purchased!!! Come again? Yes, even from my list of purchased apps! But my credit card is short of some GBP 20.

You haven't accomplished anything. The developers from Ironic will still eat dinner tonight, their families will still love them tomorrow. In short ...whatever damage you think you've caused them is superficial. What you've really done is diminished this site as a reputable source to find reviews on software. In the end it's always best to vote with your dollars. In your zeal to crap on Ironic you are "ironically" crapping on Macupdate.com.

I own Leap and when I run the "check for updates" it tells me that 2.5.4 is the latest version! I am not going to the App Store for the update either.

Version 3 is a paid upgrade friend. It doesn't automatically down load it for you because the choice is up to you if you want to upgrade.

Version 3 has some new features that work nicely with Lion. If you're happy with 2.5.4 stick with it. It's great too.

As this company tries to force me into the MacAppStore I just deleted this application. It was never that good that I really used it but MAS only is a NoGo. Sorry, you just lost a customer

Yep! [No pun intended, vis-vis Ironic's other app]
I've started a discussion on Ironic's Forum about this very issue. I've been a customer ever since Leap—and Yep—came out. I refuse to use the MAS.

Count me as another lost [shall I say "shafted"?] customer as well.

Force you? Really? Did Apple force you to buy Lion? Or your new Macbook? Maybe this sounds harsh, but you're the kind of customer that third party devs should care less about.

What's wrong with the App Store? It's awesome! It helps developers sell their software.

Ever heard of a business model? It's how people make a living.

It's not like you have to pay for retro-grade software so it will work on your computer. Or, do you think that Lion should be free too? Complain about the App Store somewhere else.

I'm out also. The MAS is the worst thing Apple has done yet, with iCloud a close second. If you think it's great, come back in 3-5 years and see if MUD still exists or if Apple has locked out all non-MAS apps.

I'm honestly curious. What's wrong with the Mac App store? It helps developers sell more software and it keeps track of everything with one payment method. I don't understand the problem.

1. No trials or demos
2. Sandboxing
3. Several apps I have (including Leap) have to be repurchased once the developer goes the MAS route. In none of these cases have I found the software is improved or upgraded-just moved. In many cases, features are crippled or removed. See #2 above.
4. I like the developer to get 100% of my purchase $. and yes, I have heard of a business model. Don't get snarky until you've done your research.
5. Use some deductive reasoning. Can you buy an iOS app outside the App Store? No. Do you not think the day will come when Apple will decide that no apps can run on a given OS unless they came through MAS?
MacUpdate exists because there is a huge community of app junkies out there who know how to find good apps and purchase them outside of Apple's box. We come here for evaluations and updates. I'd hate to see this go away.
I used to be an Apple fanboy, but I've seen too much of late that really has me worried about the course Apple has charted.

@Anon-Bud Thanks for the kind words.
Forgot a huge one:
6. No upgrade pricing to full point releases. I have so much software where the developer has created goodwill by recognizing that existing customers are valuable, and offer a discounted price to move up to the next full version. This cannot happen on MAS.
