Submerge overview

Submerge is the easiest way to add hardcoded subtitles to your movies and TV shows. The subtitled movie will play on almost anything, like your computer, smartphone, portable device, or game console. Submerge supports many text-based subtitle formats as input, and you can export the subtitled movie for the most common devices in just one click. Submerge also has a built-in subtitle search-and-download tool that makes finding the right subtitles really easy. It also has a fullscreen player built-in, so you can watch the subtitled movie directly within Submerge.

Features
  • Create subtitled movies that are playable on your computer, smartphone, portable device or game console.
  • Add subtitles to almost any visual format like MOV, AVI, MKV, MP4, etc.
  • Supports the major subtitle file formats like SubRip (.srt), SubViewer 1 and 2 (.sub), SubStation Alpha (.ssa/.ass) and MicroDVD.
  • Find subtitle files easily using the built-in subtitle search tool.
  • Exporter presets for iPhone, iPod, iPad, Apple TV, Cellphone, PSP, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.
  • Force aspect ratio to 16:9, 4:3 or 3:2 to use your monitor space more efficiently.
  • Watch subtitled movies in fullscreen without leaving the application.
  • Merge multiple movies together using simple copy and paste.
  • Localized in English, Italian, French, Finnish, Spanish, Greek, Portuguese/Brazilian, Dutch, German, Slovak, Russian, Polish, Traditional Chinese, and Swedish.

Note: Submerge cannot add hardcoded subtitles to movies or TV shows purchased or rented in the iTunes store due to DRM protection.

What’s new in version 3.9.1

Updated on Jun 28 2022

  • Fixed a bug where subtitles could get out of sync on export.
  • Now tries to fallback on FFmpeg if AVFoundation export fails.

Why would I want to use this, when free Subler makes full iOS compatible text subtitles from VOBSUB or let you burn in the subtitles should you want that? I don't see why burn-in should be preferable.

It works. Definitely watch the (brief) screencast on the app's homepage for orientation. Developer is friendly and engaging.

I really liked Submerge initially and used it quite a few times. However I am finding I brings my Imac to a grinding hold by taking more than 10 GB of memory (says Activity Monitor) and Sometimes just says "Waiting......." and does nothing else but Claiming memory... Seems like some serious issues in an app that I payed good money for... :( Nothappy!

I have the 2.2.3 Submerge version and it`s been pretty helpful to hardsub videos for my translations. It takes a long time though to export the video. The new version Submerge 3.0 came recently and I`ve been wondering why do I have to purchase the program again if I already purchased the previous version? It doesn`t make sense..

Suggestions: All this app needs is a basic editor and some sync / timing features and I could delete all the other apps I have for working with subs.

this is an amazing product. i had been looking for something like submerge for quite a while, meaning to add my own subs to home movies, and everything i got to was either too expensive or plain bad. submerge is VERY fast, VERY easy to use, has great features. Support was really amazing. I had made a mistake when purchasing and sent an emotional e-mail thinking i would get no answer, was answered within minutes, and helped out-- even out of the way, to my utter satisfaction. i highly recommend it!!!

Overall a good program with some very poor customer support. My copy of Submerge stopped working suddenly (quitting right after I began the application). I contacted Bitfield, and they told me that I would have to buy the newer version to receive support. That sucks...guess their support for prior versions vanishes right after an update. I'm avoiding their stuff in the future.

Submerge has saved me in the very last few hours of my deadline. It's a brilliant product, and I appreciate so much the fact that you can insert subtitles (.srt files and possibly others) to a video (14 minutes of 1080p) and flatten it in just under 2 minutes. The ability of also choosing whatever font you want, and the plate feature are just amazing. Thank you for building such a beautiful product. :)

Great piece of software. Works as advertised. I use it to subtitle movies for clients and it paid back its cheap price many times over. Also: great support from the developer.

The apps (Submerge and iSubtitle) run perfectly – and so does the support: competent, friendly and (perhaps most important) 100% patient. Thanks to Jörgen!

Does exactly what I need it to do, does it flexibly, and does it as quickly as my computer can handle. What's particularly nice about this app is the responsiveness of the developer. When I started using the app to burn in subtitles I noticed that it wasn't adding line breaks when a chunk of text grew too large and overran the borders of the image. In under three hours the developer has responded to my email about the matter, addressed the issue, and mailed me a link to a version which fixed the problem. I have since used this software to output 1200 video files with burned-in titles and it has been stable, fast, and quick. I recommend Submerge wholeheartedly.

What can you ask of an app other than it actually works? Well, maybe that it be reasonably priced to boot? Enter Submerge, the one-stop subtitle quick fix for all your subtitling needs. Though it's easy to use, it is nonetheless loaded with features. It even has a great built-in player. Though I was a bit skeptical at first, I was gladly surprised to find it worked like a dream, no hassles. Though I did end up having some questions on some aspects of Submerge as I kept exploring the app, customer service was nothing short of AMAZING. No run-arounds, no waiting, no useless replies. Just straight-forward answers that get you going. But I guess when you are dealing with a solid piece of software such as this, any answer to your question is the right one. Thanks Bitfield and keep up the great work. Definitely more than your money's worth.

Clean interface but the drawer is not used nowadays for OSX application. But this is a minor issue. The only problem I encounter - no subtitles on some mkv I tried. In general a good and cheap application.

Really a great app, fast to coding and deadly simple to use. I did some test with my iphone, ipod, ps3 and xbox (using program's presets) I encoded 2 h.264 avi file and a full-hd mkv file for my tests, all with an external .srt source for subs. Iphone: Very fast encoding for all 3 videos, the output files were flawless. Ipod: Same as Iphone, fast decoding and perfect output. ps3 (used both 480p and 720p format for the mkv's conversion, custom for the avis): the 480p files were perfect, the 720p file is fine (a little too much pixelating,I think using custom options will make it perfect). Xbox: The 3 files were perfect, oddly I had to recode an .avi (seems corrupted on my first try, but i think it was a computer's fault, not program) 5/5 for this beautiful piece of app, the best both in Mac/Windows environment (I have not found a software in windows capable of the same performance)

The best app of it's kind. i could not find anything better. It would be great if a future soft render option will be added! There are many font and encoding (more then enough languages) options. A little slow but that's QuickTime! I f you need your videos on almost any device then you should buy it. Nice work!!!

If your movie has a video and an .srt file, Submerge makes it easy to merge them so that the result can be seen on your iPod Touch. From start to finish, processing should take no more than three or four minutes. The result: a movie with nicely contrasted subtitles that you can watch "on the road." The software is intuitive and easy to use. If you're starting with a 800mb file, expect the subbed movie to be around 1.4 gigs. For that reason, you might want to reduce the size of the movie to 320 x 176; this effectively halves its size on your portable device. iSquint or VisualHub are excellent solutions (if you can get a copy), and they're what I use. An excellent piece if software, and economical.

Save it as a QuickTime Movie (MOV). That should do it. It might not matter but I was using H.264 video and M4A for audio.

You're wrong actually. Submerge DOES add the subs as a QuickTime layer (png) when using the "Save as" command...
