Invisibility Toggler enables you to view invisible files in the Mac OS X Finder.

The first time you run it, all invisible files will become visible. The next time you run it, invisible files will be hidden again.

Invisibility Toggler is fast, well-developed, remarkably easy to use, doesn't ask you for confirmation each time you run it, comes with complete source code which you can modify for your private use, and the author doesn't demand that you to pay anything to use it (although a small donation is suggested).

What's New
Version 1.1:
  • Fixed an issue that would cause Invisibility Toggler to display the message "An error occurred while trying to read the current visibility setting" if the user account had never previously been configured to display invisible files in the Finder
  • >
  • Made improvements to help the Finder keep track of which windows were open and their positions on screen before quitting (this still doesn't work perfectly; see Known Issues)
  • Fixed a potential issue that could have prevented Invisibility Toggler from toggling the visibility of hidden files on first run in rare circumstances
  • Other code improvements
  • Known issues (as of 19 July 2011): Sometimes on a brand new Mac that has never had its invisibility state toggled before, the app may quit with the error message "An error occurred while trying to read the current visibility setting." Additionally, a handful of people have pointed out that if you Get Info on the application, the version number displayed is not 1.1, but rather the version of Automator used to develop the app or the Automator Launcher version.

I've corrected the version numbering on the listing. Thanks!

You say that, but clicking on the download link above still downloads a file from 2007. Care to try again?

I'm the developer. Allow me to try to clear some things up.

As of 3 August 2011, the download available here is version 1.1. It already was version 1.1 prior to Grhsvo's post; I released version 1.1 in 2007. I'm aware that when you Get Info on the app, it doesn't say 1.1; this is a known issue, but since it's purely cosmetic, and since this is a free app and very few people have made donations to support it, I haven't bothered to spend all the time it would take to fix the version number string and republish the app.

I don't believe I ever posted Invisibility Toggler on MacUpdate. Back in 2007, VersionTracker was the most popular Mac update site. I guess MacUpdate wanted to expand their library so they probably scraped the information about this app from VersionTracker (which has now been absorbed into CNET's Download.com).

Since I did not (and do not) have a developer account on MacUpdate, I wasn't really aware about this incredibly outdated listing on MacUpdate until MacUpdate Warren "corrected" the version numbering, which sent an automated message to the e-mail address in my documentation. The homepage for tJM Software was once hosted at users.aol.com a very long time ago (I started tJM Software in 1997), but AOL shut down its free Web page hosting years ago. I submitted the correct information about the app to MacUpdate on July 20th, including the correct version number, known issues, and the correct link for the developer site, which is now at http://tjmsoftware.thejoshmeister.com

Hopefully that clears up the confusion. If anyone has any more questions for me, you can find my contact information in the documentation after you download Invisibility Toggler. Please don't reply to me here since I almost never check this MacUpdate listing, so it could be months (or years) before I see your reply.

Great app! Does exactly what the name implies every time with no problems. I'm only giving it a 4 because the features are very basic since it only is a on/off toggle with no extra options (that's why that got a 3) which might have been nice but considering what this app is and what it does it's not even a real issue.

Great app! One I shall keep using for a long time to come!

Just as described!

Found tons of invisible files I didn't even know I had from old programs I trashed.

Good job!

The author created Invisibility Toggler specifically because other free programs don't change the visibility setting automatically; they prompt the user first, forcing you to click on a button when all you really want is quick results. If you want to be prompted before the setting is changed, you can either use someone else's program, or if you feel comfortable editing AppleScript code, you can modify the included source code to suit your needs (refer to the "Source Code License" section of the included Read Me).
