Utility Lock (formerly known as SleepLock) is a custom built Screen Locking mechanism, it was designed after the Apple lock that is available in Apple Remote Desktop, its purpose is to allow for a greater customization in how the screen is locked, you can now have it locked on Sleep/Idle/Intervals and with the AppleScript support you can combine it with other applications like WiFiScriptor.
What's New
Version 1.0.3a:
Fixed bug relating to new password method
Version 1.0.3a:
Added hidden preference for logging (Requested by : BillM)
Great little app!
But to be 100% effective (for what i'm looking for) it needs another feature - require some sort of key combination to bring up the password entry screen. Sort of like "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to unlock this computer" type of thing. Like Windows has...
My cats are constantly running over the keyboard and it keeps making that sound. Same issue when Utility Lock is on...
YEah, and i also was never able to install the 1.0.3a upgrade. It keeps deleting itself...
Enabled the use of a password for waking from sleep ONLY.
I use a MBP from home 70% of the time and the occasions when I really need security are when I'm away. When I am, I am always closing the MBP which puts it to sleep, this will automatically guard me from forgetting to set the "Require password to wake from sleep or screensaver" feature. I leave this setting off because when I work from home I use a screensaver and entering my password 15 times a day would drive me nuts.
BTW- remember to add this program to your account's 'login items'.
Looked like a promising application. I'm assuming it works quite well on desktop machines, but this was driving me nuts on my MacBook Pro.
Every time the computer tried to wake up when it was closed (USB activity, Bluetooth keyboard wake, mouse wake), the computer would attempt to wake up, then fall asleep (like it normally would). Though when you tried to actually use it again (open lid) the screen would stay black and could only be fixed by a hard restart.
Same goes for trying to use clamshell mode; would just wake up, maybe put black pixels on the second screen, and fall asleep again. It exhibits the same problems as I described earlier.
Great concept and idea, but bad support for these types of situations. I would stay away if you are a laptop user.
Sorry if it sounded like a personal attack; it really wasn't. I thought it would be most beneficial to post about it here so others wouldn't fall into the same hole I did and think it was an SMC error. If you want, you can email me and I can answer questions or test builds to help fix this problem.
Just a note to say thank you for proving this clean, well thought-out, and useful program.
Very thoughtful of you; and like so very many other excellent Mac developers, you continue to make our platform (”the computer for the rest of us”) shine brightly in the cluttered world of so many who “just don't get it.”
Love the Mac - and love you guys for continuing to make this the “only” OS I'll ever use.
Hats off to the Good Guys…ah, that would be-you

1. Better Image for the menu icon and the lock screen(I prefer a simple grey lock than an image from google) which I could create one for you if photoshop in not your thing.
1. Well im always happy for graphics provided and i admit the statusIcons and the icon for the app are horrible but i need people to submit them, however the lock image used is what Apple provides but ill take replacements if they are good enough
2. I really dont want to go down the path of adding too many features that the app loses its original meaning, but ill look into it
just installed and run Utility Lock. Every time I click on Lock Screen it does it but at the same time launches Incorrect Password warning and then locks the screen. Thus, once I enter password to unlock the locked screen it does it but forces me to re-enter password twice in the Incorrect Password window. How to fix it?
A few thoughts after messing around for a while...(already put together my own locked image)
1. Can there be a different way of handling options for timers?A couple ideas:
a. Checkbox to get lock time from sleep time preference.
b. Checkbox to get lock time from screen saver time setting.
c. Text entering field for fine control of timers.
2. Can it be made to allow the screensaver to promote over lock screen? The screensaver doesn't currently show up over it for me and when I unlock the screensaver is up, but hasn't actually run yet (like its just idle waiting) then starts. I would like to be able to have an alarmclock app or other apps trigger at specified times while the screen is locked something that doesn't work when my Mac comes out of sleep with Apple's built in lock mechanism.
3. Got the following memory allocation errors in console.log:
Utility Lock(802,0xa000d000) malloc: *** error for object 0x36e050: double free
Utility Lock(802,0xa000d000) malloc: *** set a breakpoint in szone_error to debug
Should I worry? ;)
4. An option to show desktop image / any image instead of solid color background would be cool.
Awesome app otherwise. I still have some other things to try to see if I can use it for what I want. I am definitely gonna get a couple bucks for a donation ready! Please keep working on it!
