BlackenedPixels is an improved version of the "black screen" ScreenSaver. In addition to making your displays black, BlackenedPixels also trims the brightness control all the way down, allowing applications to run normally, but without the power consumption (and heat etc) normally associated with screensaver operation.

I really wish this would be updated to 10.6 compatibility. It was the workhorse screensaver on my 24 in. iMac since it turned off the backlighting.

Now all I have are savers that just black out the pixels.

IMPORTANT ADDENDUM:

Fails to turn of backlighting on my 2007 24" iMac and its 2nd display.

Too bad!!! I really had hopes for this.

It worked on my 24 in iMac before Snow Leopard.

Works flawlessly on my MbPro and I expect to see the same on my 24" iMac.

As others have said here, turning off backlighting is a great move.

Apple should give the author a generous fee and put it into OS X. An absolute must have for every Mac.

I've been wanting something like this for years. Now I can get rid of my custom script!

If only Telstra would use something like this instead of using a black screensaver.

This is exactly what a screensaver should be. Simple, low-resource and (most importantly) it actually saves your screen. Once the CRT burn-in problem was solved screensavers became toys. Backlight dimming and lifetime, however, are a new issue with LCDs. This is the only screensaver I've seen that actually does something about that. Well done!

Hi.

I've been using "blank" (just black) screensavers since 10.1.

The main advantage of this one is, that the display not only turns black, but is also switched off.

Very cool and just what I wanted.

I've been using it for quite some time now on a MBP and it works perfectly.

Thank you very much for this simple piece of software that makes you happy every day... ;-)

This is perfect. Apple should include this with every mac.

Excellent when you want to kill the screen but let processing continue, or go away for a quick second and save battery life without the sleep/wake delay.

i love this screensaver. the only thing i wish i could do now would be to active fast user switching to bring up the login window when the screensaver activates. i tried using sleepwatcher, and that does work when the power management shuts off the display, but not when blackenedpixels does, so it seems the screensaver is not actually shutting off the display.
