IPAddressSentinel is a menu bar app which displays and copies your current machines IP addresses and name. (Only the "first" IP address found to save space.).
Since the app registers itself to receive notifications of changes in machine IP address, it is always current, and you can use it to know when you Mac is connected to the internet by just looking at your menu bar. If it is not connected then the title will be empty: "-.-.-.-".
This app can also:
Include machine name in menu bar
Include wireless network name in menu bar

What's New
Version 1.1.8:
The email messenger now reports when connections to the mail server were unexpectedly terminated, timed out or otherwise failed to send a message. Messages are sent to the console log, as usual.
A problem with the timing of external IP address cache refreshing has been fixed: the cache refresh was not always occurring with the implication that changes were not being reported in email notifications. (The external IP address is cached because it is looked up at "whatismyip.com" and their policy requires that access to their service is limited to not more than every 5 minutes.)

This is a developer comment in reply to some of the other user feedback:
I just took a quick look at BwanaDik, looks good. Does very similar basic operation, but these are different applications. Also, the preferences have been moved into the app itself, rather than requiring a separate preference pane. This is something I will be incorporating into all my menu bar applications over time, in the near future.
IPSentinelStatus, although not free, is part of a bundle, my "Utilities Bundle." When you register any utility in the bundle, including IPSentinelStatus, you get all of them! I think that's quite an unusual deal and package of Mac Apps for such a low price, and upgrades to everything is always free. So give them a try! This is the home page for the Utility Bundle: http://www.limit-point.com/Utilities.html
Finally, if anyone finds missing features or problems, in any of my applications, that they would like incorporated or fixed, just let me know. I always try to accommodate your suggestions, in any product I write. This is how the a product evolves. I am very accessible via email. Check out the website at: http://www.limit-point.com/Contact.html. I check email much more frequently than the reviews because of time constraints. Please accept my apology for that, and I look forward to hearing from you in email!
Bwanadik is great... not abandoned even though it has not been updated in a bit. It was updated and run great on SL for anybody with that concern. Another plus is you won't have to have a pref pane and an app like ipsentinel, just a small app.
For simple displaying of an ip address I suggest you take a look at ipmenulet. Small memory footprint and Open Source. It does only display your ip address so those looking for email reminders and the "works" I would definitely recommend you take advantage of Bwanadik.
limit-point makes good software and I was hoping this would be as I thought but like the response below me, it merely picks up my internal ip and does not show external at all. If your looking for a program to display your external ip address in the menubar with automatic refresh and just a click to refresh it yourself I would check out the Free IPMenulet. It won't perform tasks such as emailing you when your external changes but it will show your external, and update itself before you even have the chance to refresh it most of the time. Never had a glitch w/ IPMenulet. I also never had a glitch w/ IPSentinel... it just wouldn't pick up my external over my network. Of course it could be an error on my part but this is my experience. Try both out, see which suits you best and go from there. limit-point is constantly updating which is nice, IPMenulet not as much but then again it doesn't need an update as it is quite a simple little bugger that does the trick.
I'm commenting my own review hmmm, I know the developer responded to the post about the external not being visible and that it was fixed a few versions back but I for some reason still have the same problem. Other than that, if you want to be updated when your ip changes, buy limit-point's bundle if that's not needed, then check out the simpler freeware apps, but for the value, you can't beat this piece of software. I feel my original comment was a bit harsh but it didn't fit my needs, and I expressed that. Must be my router or something but when connected to other connections the developer was right, external can be displayed, and displayed correctly. Just not my network, or apparently the network of the guy who posted underneath me. Just wanted to clear that up and also let those who read the review to know that they should definitely check the app out along w/ the other recommended apps listed, out of the "notify upon ip change" apps. shareware or freeware ipsentinel is the best imo for notifications, hands down. I'm actually running this and ipmenulet, menulet when on my network and sentinel when I am out and about. LP packages are by far the most generous I have seen, and they actually give you useful apps.
Just for a quick update. I have not used this application and am not commenting on that but on my suggestion of buying the "bundle" and the company that limit-point is.
I ran into a problem a week or so ago with the developer asking for three applications I had bought. He chose not to include serial addresses with them but hosted them on his site for a registered user to download.
When I asked for the download after I forgot to back them up when I traded out hardware I was told that I can't have the apps, that they were not made by him but his son and since his son has gone a different route and oppened a company himself he took the rights of the software with him.
I asked how he could put this in the "bundle" that offers lifetime upgrades and future applications and his reasoning with me was that it would be odd and weird if he put the apps separately or with a separate disclaimer.
A ridiculous answer and now I can't get three main applications, applications I had bought as I bought the bundle but now apps I bought I can't have since I he never provided me with serial numbers for the applications. Applications I bought which all came with future upgrades and updates... I now can not have applications I paid for. Just for a heads up.
This ability to see the external IP has been added to version 1.0.7. In that version the external IP address appears in the menu itself (as an option.)
I like the idea of this app but it's not working properly on my MacBook Pro running 10.6.4. Even though I've set the preferences to show the external ip in the menu, it is showing the local ip. Also, it intermittently doesn't show anything at all. I looked on the devs website for a support page and couldn't find anything. If these issues get worked out I would consider buying it.
