Say It Save It is a free application for Mac OS X that speaks text files and saves them as MP3 files. Say It Save It uses MP3 encoding libraries from The LAME Project.
What's New
Version 2.1 adds the ability to automatically import MP3s created with Say It Save It directly into iTunes.
Requirements
PPC / Intel, Mac OS X 10.4.2 or later.
Outstanding application. Now, any book can be an audio book with Say It Save It and the Alex voice on Leopard. This capability was still considered science fiction not that many years ago.
Fast, and runs very well on Quad Core 2.66 GHz Mac Pro. However, on our PPC iMac G5, the application doesn't seem to recognize the Alex voice when Alex is set in System Preferences>Speech, and the menu items in the app's Preferences sidebar are all greyed out, including the choice of voices. What I might do is attempt to edit the preferences file manually, or copy the preferences file from the Mac Pro to the G5.
Meanwhile, we copy our text files through our LAN to the Mac Pro, run them through Say It Save It, and then directly transfer them back over the LAN into an iPod connected to the G5 by dragging the Mp3 file produced by SISI right onto the iPod's menu item in the Devices menu section of iTunes. It's an extra step because of an iPhone usually connected to the Mac Pro, but well worth the effort because the speed is so much faster on the Mac Pro.
Overall, this app opens up tremendous possibilities, and enables "reading" and learning that otherwise would never fit into my busy schedule. Even my dogs get many more walks now because I'm listening to the SISI-processed files always on my iPod, and we're all losing weight!
Bravo, and big thanks to the developer for his fine work.
This is a wonderful application. I use this all the time to make alert sounds for my GPS. I only wished you were able to control the speed of the voice they way you could on the old Mac OS 9 system. Sometimes it speaks the phrase way too fast to really understand. Not a gripe, just a comment on a possible feature. Thanks.
Say It Save It has helped our ESE students tremendously, as well as our mainstreamed students at the elementary school level.
As an all-Macintosh county, the Apple OS has a cool "speak text" feature but a hot key must be remembered.
This app, "Say It Save It", means the student can launch it from the Dock, and use drag-and-drop for any typed document to hear it, and then save it by clicking on a button for future listening. It has helped some of our students to improve reading fluency because its ease of use is super, and accessible from any machine we have running 10.3.9 to 10.4.8.
We love this app at my school.

One of the few text-2-voice app's that recognises and uses 10.5's new 'Alex' voice - but it throws up an AppleScript error if you try to save your speech as an mp3.

If that was fixed it would be great (again).
