BPMer overview

BPMer is a powerful track analyzer.

  • Precision BPM detector
  • Completely automatic, no need to tap
  • Batch processing of folder or iTunes playlist
  • Writes BPM to file tag
  • Exports BPM and other data to iTunes
  • Supports mp3 and AAC
  • Detects music intro & fade-out
  • Optionally optimizes iTunes start & stop times
  • Optionally adjusts track volume
  • Genre filter: process selected genres or skip selected genres
  • License package includes AccuBeatMix
BPMer is more than a mere BPM counter. It also detects intro & fade-out to skip them in iTunes. And thanks to AccuBeatMix, you just get perfect, beat-matching transitions. The beat never stops!

BPMer does not support DRM-protected files such as iTunes Music Store files.

This software bills itself as functional, but is anything but. It will leave your id3 tags a mess, and it won't even correctly add BPM data to all of the files it damages. Don't even think about looking for a support forum, FAQ or list of common problems, either... Because there aren't any. Don't even hope that they'll respond to your e-mails. It didn't happen for me, and there's nothing to suggest it will happen for anyone else. I'd say use Windows via Parallels and run MixMeister for a better solution. Anything but this. 1) Some files had their artist, album, title or genre field jumbled up (e.g. Android would become something like nArdiod). Sometimes it was all four fields, sometimes it was one. It's been a month or two and I'm still finding these occasionally. 2) Some files that had BPM data previously were left with no BPM data at all. 3) Demo version over-writes comments in your tags saying that the BPM was determined by BPMer, and the pro version neglects to remove these. I hope you don't keep anything interesting in your comment tags if you use the demo version. 4) The log file is almost entirely useless. BPMer told me there were errors but the log only had a list of every file scanned followed by "updated", "up-to-date" or "filtered due to genre". No error messages to be found. This is not the software you're looking for.

Be careful if you use the BPMer option to reduce intros. The result is not good at all.... ant the app does not allow you to reverse this reduction. You will have to do it manually song vy song. Not too bad if your library is about 100 songs. But with thousands of songs. Ouch !

Really nice piece of software - I like it! Unfortunately it looks it screws up special chars on updating the ID3 Tag of an mp3 file. All my german 'umlauts' like ü ö ä etc are gone - not nice.. and I don't understand what action the option 'Export to iTunes' does.. seems to export in anycase..

Version 1.1.5 still destroys the cover pictures that were stored within my MP3 files! PLEASE fix that. It's unuseable for me with such a bug. Thank you.

I've tried Tangerine and BeaTunes before.. Thought I'd try another app to detect BPMs.. First note, is it took me awhile to figure out that the evaluation version only works on files with names starting with A-J... So if your wondering why the app is just flakey, that might be the cause. Second... Lets take the song Overcome by Tricky.. My tapping counter says it should read 84 BPM (its Trip Hop), but BPMer re-wrote it to 165. Third... Far Away From Home by Groove Coverage.. It records it as 182 while my tapping counter reads 92.. This seems to be a common problem where its off by a multiple of two and is triggering off of something else which isn't the baseline. I understand, but I want a way of handling this.. Sensitivity, expected range, or even a way of playing a blurb per file and then asking if that seems reasonable? There was also difficulty updating the BPM view in iTunes, but I'm going to attribute that to iTunes not updating with the files properly rather than BPMer.

Apparently it is stated in the About Box that the evaluation mode only supports Titles starting with A-J... (Did I completely miss it, or is it not shown until you look there?) Anyways, for those evaluating also, change the filename to have an 'a' at the beginning and you can test how it behaves on those other songs. Cheers!

I'ved demoed Tangerine! and BeaTunes in the past and found both to have troubles consistently nailing the BPM for my music (most of which is electronic). So I'm excited to try a new Promo'ed App! First thing out of the box, it completely misses the first several songs in my test playlist,... I wonder.. What's going on?! After moving files around and trying to figure out whats going on.. I realized its actually the limitations of the Evaluation (per comment in the Log file..) A bit subtle eh?
