Als long as gems like this app wont run on Lion or its successors there are undeniable reasons to keep at least one machine with Snow Leopard.

With LION ready to pounce, what are Sigma Chess users planning to do to protect their investments in licenses for HIARCS (sp/mp) and Deep Junior? I've heard that Shredder, ExaChess and Scid can all use external HCI chess engines; so, which is easiest to set up using Sigma's directory tree, and configure, and, well, get playing?

ExaChess is the most Mac like an have most of the features, but lack some UCI engine configuration features.

Shredder is over fine, but less stable than the others (lots of java or something). It has a major problem for me. It can't deal well with databases with more than 2.000 games.

Scid has all the features, even those you didn't ask for. It is fast and has analysis features at the level of a statistics junkie. It has the most demanding interface; it takes some times to learn how to use and configure all the options.

Now it's up to you. You use test the two first. Scid is freeware.

Great program but the PPC/Intel info is misleading. The HIARCS engine is a universal binary but Sigma Chess itself is PPC only and, according to the developer, will never be changed to a UB or Intel program.

@vandy72 : Moreover, if the HIARCS "Universal binary" is stripped of its PPC code using, say, Monolingual, it will no longer launch.

If you don't like Sigma, you may still use Hiarcs chess engine with another chess interface, like Scid, Shredder or ExaChess.

Great game but I wish the developer would modernize it a bit. Seems dated and also ugly. Plays a dang good chess game though.

One of the absolute best chess programs.

I'd just like to point out that only the HIARCS engine is UB. The actual application is still PPC. However, it runs very well still on my Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. The engine makes up for any lag from the actual application running under Rosetta. Honestly it's hardly noticeable that it's not fully Intel native.

I love sigma chess, but when I saw there was a new version I was hoping it would be universal. I'll take it anyway I can get it, but it would be nice.

Regardless, a huge thanks to the developer!

This is a great free chess game, I love that I can set the game to various level and that I can import pgn games.

I play Kasparov Chessmate at level 1700 winning half the time and it took me five games to beat Sigma Chess at level 1200. I believe the difference is that Sigma Chess makes fewer human like errors. This is less of a pump for my ego, but winning makes me feel like I played a good game instead of beating a bad opponent.

Doesn't have the coolness factor of Chessmaster on a PC with all of the different theme boards, but solid on all of the features that matter. I'm impressed with resource utilization and not burning CPU like Chessmaster on Mac.

A small correction to the last review - HIARCS does allow its playing strength to be set, from 1200 to 2750 Elo. The option is in a different place to all the other settings: Level | HIARCS 9.6 UCI Rating.

A nice touch is that, as well as a slider allowing the strength to be set as a number, there is also a drop-down box allowing it to be set as a (US) category (Class A-D, Expert, Candidate Master ...).

Sigma 6.2.1 crashes pretty often for me.
I notified the developer but received no reply.
Yeah, I know Sigma's free but, still. Most of the developer's of the free apps that I've tried have provided good support. I guess the developer doesn't giveashit.

Still, Sigma does play a mean game of chess.

I noticed that my hard drive space was rapidly vanishing today. Upon investigation I discovered that the HiARCS database file in the HiARCS folder had swelled to over 100GB, leaving me with 0kb of free space. There don't appear to be any setting changes which can prevent this either.
