If you have a new (supported) camera but not the newest versions of Aperture or iPhoto, you're SOL. It's tempting to complain about the lack of backwards compatibility, but you will run into the same issue with Photoshop and Lightroom. In general, older versions of Adobe Camera RAW are not updated for the most recent cameras.

However, you do have less expensive options than Aperture, Photoshop and Lightroom. IPhoto is, more or less, affordable (under $100). So is Photoshop Elements. Both do a decent job for the less demanding shutterbug.

What are you talking about? Adobe Raw is the app responsible for the raw conversion for all the adobe apps, and it's free!!! And way more compatible than Apple raw, You don't need to have the last lightroom to have more raw cameras compatible formats. Not the same with Apple!!

@ Surfspirit: I'm sorry but you are mistaken. Specific versions of Adobe Camera RAW are compatible with only certain versions of any of the Adobe image processing apps, including Lightroom, Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. This is because Adobe occasionally adds features to Camera RAW that are not backwards compatible with earlier versions of these apps. Which is one of the primary functions of the DNG Converter app. You can use it on RAW files created with new cameras not supported in earlier versions of Photoshop and Lightroom to convert such files to DNG so they can be opened with these older apps. In fact, it is precisely the mission of the DNG file format to preserve this kind of interoperability. Which is why Adobe encourages people to archive their RAW files in DNG format.

For instance, Camera RAW 6.x is not compatible with Lightroom 2 or Photoshop CS 4. It only works with Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS 5. Actually, Lightroom does not use the Adobe Camera RAW plugin. Camera RAW support is built into Lightroom - though it has a largely parallel feature set with Camera RAW; the two are developed in tandem.

Now that iLife has been broken up in the Mac App Store, iPhoto is an even better value; you can buy a standalone version for $14.99. Apple's Digital Camera RAW updates are free just as the Adobe Camera RAW updates are. And they have the same kind of version compatibility issues as Adobe Camera RAW.

Comparing iPhoto to Lightroom makes me laugh! Adobe Camera RAW is FREE, and you can convert with it and use any good photo app you want, and Lightroom use Adobe Camera Raw, it just embed it inside, but as you would know you can configure it to use another RAW converter!! iPhoto is so low level that you should't even use RAW and iPhoto in the same sentence. Anyway, everyone that knows photography knows by far that while iPhoto is kind of cool because of iLife integration is way to far away for a good photo app!

@ Surfspirit: You are truly ignorant, sad to say, and apparently unwilling or unable to be educated. Adobe Camera RAW is a plug-in that runs in Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. It is not an independent, standalone application. It is not free but is included as part of Photoshop and Elements; the updates are free, but they only update the plug-ins for the applications.

I was not comparing iPhoto and Lightroom, merely suggesting iPhoto as a less expensive option for anyone who is a "less demanding shutterbug" - which probably includes most of the people who use less expensive or less capable digital cameras - or camera phones. Of course Lightroom is a superior application - but it's much more expensive, as well. I don't know why you are so down on iPhoto, but clearly, given you level of misunderstanding, you are not qualified to judge it.

iPhoto is bad, slow and expensive for what it does, and I have sent an email to apple already quite some time because of bug in it and I haven't seen any iPhoto update until now, you can see the bug in this small video: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/420682/%20%20Upload%20Tempor%C3%A1rio/iPhotoBug.mov

There's plenty of apps that do lot more than iPhoto, take Google FREE Picasa for example, its faster, it can ever recognize RAW files that iPhoto CAN NOT!, and it has better features, yes it only misses the iPhoto eye candy.

I'd give it a -1 Rating if that were possible just for the fact that they don't seem to be interested in supporting the Panasonic FZ series of cameras. It's really stupid that one has to use Adobe Bridge to be able to view and sort the RW2 files.

Why on earth did you buy a camera knowing full well it wasn't compatible with Mac OS X/Aperture/iPhoto? you're complaining because YOU didn't do your home work before purchasing the device? I might as well whine about Apple not supporting a printer that clearly states on the box "Mac OS X is not supported". You're the type of person who smacks himself with a hammer and then blames the hammer.

@kawaii -- If Apple REALLY want to compete against Adobe's Lightroom. It needs to support MORE RAW cameras. I find it frustrating that I have NO Choice BUT to buy Lightroom since Apple's Apeture or iPhoto supports a VERY LIMITED number of RAW Cameras

I have a DMX-FZ18K camera that for MANY Years was in the top Ten Best Selling Cameras at Amazon.com YET Apeture or iPhoto does NOT support it. Lightroom does and MANY Freeware RAW programs do. Come on Apple. Improve your RAW Camera Support.

Kawai, your logic beats me. For a starter it would be nice to have simple Finder support for the RW2 files from Panasonic. I have no problem viewing the NEFs of various older Nikon cameras. I wasn't talking about Apple's applications, just being able to see what is behind the RW2 file in the Finder would help. They obviously support the FZ50, so why not continue with the FZ35,45,100, which are all excellent cameras.

@Kaweii: Buying a digital camera is about specifications, quality of the optics, user-friendlyness, price, and many more parameters. Compatibility with a given OS is one of the less important ones, because computer manufacturers can EASILY provide compatibility by software updates. Thus, it does make sense to buy a great camera even though it is not currently supported by your OS. AND it makes sense to request compatibility from the computer manufacturer. In this regard, Apple fails miserably. For years they do not support cameras which sell very well because of their features - the Panasonic FZ series is one of those. I completely agree with Mikofox that Apple should not ignore these widely spread cameras.

Mikofox ist richtig. FZ-Kameras sind in der Regel ignoriert, wenn es um RAW-Übersetzer kommt. Es macht mich traurig. Ich finde es schade, denn eine blutende FZ-Kameras wie herausragende Geräte sind.

@Kawaii-Gardiner

Your analogy isn't really apt. A printer is a peripheral for a computer. For a photographer, the computer is the peripheral to the camera.

As a Nikon shooter, I would not complain if Canon lenses do not fit in my camera but I would certainly be po'd if a certain SD or CF card fit in a comparable Canon camera and not in my Nikon.

We buy these devices because we expect Apple to support them. This expectation came when they released Aperture and signaled the world "we are a major player in photography"

This is for all of those idiotic 1-star ratings that people give because they have older computers and can't run new software. If you can't run it on your current equipment, then write a comment as such, don't give it a 1-star rating! If it doesn't run on YOUR system, that's not Apple's fault. But if it does run on your system, and causes problems or has bugs, then you can rate appropriately.

Runs great on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard and my Nikon cameras.

The fact they do not support Sigma is a failing, not a success.

@26CAB40

Excuse me, but you went to purchase a camera why didn't you investigate whether or not it is supported? when you purchase a printer - do you just randomly go out and purchase a printer and never checking compatibility? Stop complaining and start taking responsibility for your purchasing decisions - its up to you to make sure your hardware is compatible with Mac OS X and if the hardware vendor refuses to provide the specifications to Apple then it is hardly Apple's fault.

Yeah, totally lame that Apple isn't more proactive in supporting the cameras in use out there. The Sigma DP2 is a wonderful camera, that yields images that put other compact large sensor cameras to shame. So sharp and lifelike.

To answer the retarded question: Because Apple is not God.

Also, mr. Kawaii, if one were to purchase only cameras being supported by Apple at the time of purchase, why would there be a need for these Raw support updates? Your question really is rather unintelligent.

Despite being listed on this site as PPC/Intel, this appears to be Intel ONLY. Neither of my G5s can install the update, nor does it show up in Software Update.

On my daughters Intel iMac it installs perfectly well.

I waited and waited for support for my Olympus E-620, only to have Apple pee in my coffee with the one update I can use. Apple works hard at pretending the G5 never existed or was last sold 4 years ago. Bah!

When the second largest technology corporation in the country can't be bothered to provide driver updates, there is a serious problem.
