CoolBookController overview

CoolBook lets you monitor CPU frequency, voltage, and temperature.

Registered users may set voltage and frequency manually. This can dramatically reduce heat dissipation and fan noise.

Use your MacBook with full performance without a battery installed.

Storing your battery properly when not used will reduce battery aging.

Where is the LION support! Why won't you even answer folks who ask about when you will update the code to function on Lion. It looks like I am not the only one that could never get a response back from the developer. - Frustrated!

Does what the developer says on his website... Never expect to hear anything from him after sending your license ! Yes, I recommend this app if you know what you are doing. Don't expect any help or support from the developer. You are on your own.

Works spectacularly well when you FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS and set up the voltage and frequency settings well. It has saved me from upgrading my MBA-revA and therefore saved me from upgrading and spending many dollars! It prevents my MBA-A from climbing up to 100C, keeping it cool down to 75C max with power savings and hence battery savings such that after 650+ cycles still has 88% health. (The 12% loss is probably due to me keeping it plugged in AC all the time). I can comfortably keep it on my lap and even reduce the temps further down if I find it too much on my legs. It extends the battery range very well; it IS, without a doubt, the BEST $10 I have spent on anything to do with an Apple. As for all those whiners complaining about the TOS - Harden up, princesses. You pay for a $1000+ machine that rocks yet complain about a $10 app that literally saves it from losing a core; preventing it from becoming half of what it's worth; get real. The pitiful $10 asked for this app is basically a donation! It is really worth $50 for what it does. The TOS is there so that it doesn't cost $50; the licensing server prevents pirates from ripping it off. Kudos to the Marcus (the developer) for sticking to the TOS. I've asked for help before on some licensing problems when updating & purchasing another license for my MBP 2007 and I've received it. Marcus is likely a one-man team - come-on, he's got a life too you know! Sometimes what you need to do is RTFM. There are countless webpages floating around that will help you get there. I would probably only offer a couple of suggestions: 1- Make the app work in such a way so that the finding of VF pairs is almost automatic; with the user only needing to HARD-RESET to continue the next test when the kernel panics. 2- Please make it work for OS X LION. My MBA-A is DYING as I speak (and typing this). Oh how good Coolbook is - I'd pay $5 in a sneeze to get it working again. Please let me know mate, I know you're probably hard at work finding a way... Else it's gonna be a new MBA for me. (See? $5 can potentially save me $1000)

Does the developer answer any email for support ? I've been emailing the guy all day long. So now I bought CoolBook after upgrading to Lion, and it's not working ! Do I have to pay to upgrade ? I just can't get the guy to answer any of my emails !

When I installed it, it said it couldn't find a driver. As a result, the right side of the window is greyed out, I can't adjust anything.

I have been a happy customer with 2 licenses. It has been a stable app that truly prolongs battery life. I use it in conjunction with SmcFanControl. This latest version still lists incorrect CPU speeds on both, my MacBook2,1,[Merom] and my MacBookPro4,1.[Penryn]. Both units running 10.6.6 Hopefully these older Intel units will continue to receive support. I'd hate to loose the functionality that Coolbook provides. My 2006 MacBook Battery still holds a 3.5 Hr. charge after 5 years of continuous [24/7] runtime, thanks to CoolBook.

The license terms and customer service are atrocious. When I bought the license in 2006, the terms simply said "for one computer", which isn't too unusual and is usually interpreted to mean some form of "one computer at a time". Since then, the author has retroactively changed the license terms so that only the serial number of the originally registered machine is accepted. He now refuses to allow me to register the program on a different machine! Avoid!

Love this app, but licensing terms for computer instead for a person is kinda irritating. The process of setting voltages could be automatic ( I don't know if its possible). Anyway, as I have mentioned before : I love this app, i have underclocked three computers and its working great.

This is why I stopped using it as well. The licensing terms are terrible, especially for a small developer. Too bad.

Coolbook is a handy (if sometimes troublesome) piece of software brought to it's knees by the most draconian licence terms I've seen! "This license will work with one unique computer only. The customer is allowed to reset the license once. This in the event of broken and repaired computer. It is not possible to transfer the license to a new computer." This makes Adobe and their much criticised activation terms of their Creative Suite look like Santa Claus. I sympathise will developers who put a lot of time and effort into writing and supporting applications and wish to make some money from it without it being being posted to every torrent site imaginable. This developer, IMHO, simply goes to far though and appears to view everyone as a potential copyright infringer. Therefore I, for one, will not be parting with my cash under these terms.

CoolBook is -in my opinion- a MUST HAVE for every MacBook / MacBook Pro owner. I have installed it on 3 MacBooks until today and must admin that I am completely satisfied by this utility. More than +30% battery life on all of my MacBooks, as well as MUCH cooler running temperatures; oh, and almost NO fan noise anymore. Will definitely test it on a couple of iMacs I am waiting to be shipped as well...

Coolbook made my first generation Macbook Air usable! I was running WinXP under VMWare, and before CoolBook, this configuration came crawling to an overheating near standstill... I had concluded that the Air was pretty much unusable for my needs. After installing and configuring Coolbook, the Air performs very well in this configuration - and amazingly, the processor seems to thrive on the minimum settable voltage at every possible clock speed. $10 saved my MacBook Air. So what if it's locked to a specific computer? It's $10. Buy it again for the next laptop.

Does not work in latest Snow Leopard seed. Kext does not load in 64 bit mode. It loads in 32 bit but kextcache parameters changed, complains about wrong arguments in the logs.

Buy new hardware? Want to reinstall your registered coolbook app? The developer will tell you you're out of luck. Neat little app but the dev says registration is only good for a specific machine. You have to pony up more $$ for another license. Lame policy for an otherwise useful app.
