Not sure what's happened to Adobe in recent years, but apparently, it's become acceptable for their applications to simply quit, crash or hang midstream. SoundbBooth is a great example of this -- it tends to crash as often as not. Considering how much it costs, this is simply unacceptable.
With each new version, Adobe's "Creative Suite" is fast becoming "Photoshop and some second-rate apps of dubious quality." Shame, really.

As for features, its kind of nothing special, you can get more outa Garage Band which comes FREE with your Mac.
I find the interface somewhat confusing, especially the way how it allows for multiple sounds to be open at once. I would prefer each sound in its own window or to be able to see all the sounds at once.
I personally think that the interface controls (buttons, sliders, tabs and such) are hideous, reminds me of some bad haxie theme.
All in all the only advantage of SoundBooth is the history, but its only a matter of time till the other choices add this ability. I was excited to hear that this was in the spirit of SoundEdit 16, but let down by the confusing, cumbersome interface and lack of "features".

From the start I tried to open an MP3 file in it but couldn't and had to convert it to an AIFF first. I'm still not sure what's so groundbreaking about this program that it couldn't be compiled for PPC as well.

Only recently have some pro-level audio editors allowed you to import MP3s. I don't think early versions of GarageBand did. The reason is that if you are creating a high-quality work, highly compressed material like MP3 will not be acceptable as source material. The question is whether Adobe considers this pro-level for the final product.
Re: Intel
If Adobe based this on the code of their existing Audition pro audio editor for Windows, the question is not whether it is "impossible" to compile for PPC. The question is whether they think it's "financially worth it" to do a full port to a different CPU. They probably think making a Mac Intel version is an easy win so why not. That's good, because it means if all Macs were still PPC we wouldn't have even had the chance to try this.

I wonder what made this impossible to create for PPC.

At the moment, it doesn't do a ton, but the app does exhibit some nice ideas. I especially like the editing paradigm of dragging tabs from the left or right to trim the file, the fades being dragged, and the method of adjusting gain on any selection.
The spectral editing is pretty damn cool, too, and I hope more detail and ability is added to that. It could be incredibly useful for dialog editing & clean-up on films.
Keep going, Adobe!!!

If I had an Intel I would run Adobe Audition in Win XP on BootCamp or Parallels.....
Damn it...
