Apple
iPod Reset Utility restores the following iPod models back to their factory settings, when iTunes is unable to do so:
- iPod shuffle (1st Generation)
- iPod shuffle (2nd Generation)
The restore process completely erases all music and data on your iPod, and installs current iPod software on it.

To be frank, after an iTunes 7x update, the Shuffle simply went undetected going forward. This appears a common problem re: Apple Support Discussions.

My Shuffle died six months ago while I was updating its software and would no longer respond. Took it to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store, where several staffers couldn't get it to work and advised me to throw it away.
But this application quickly fixed it, and now it's working perfectly. Many thanks, Apple!

Does anyone of you have an idea how I could fix it? It doesn't even show a sign of being powered by the US port (I tried them all), you know...

Since the Apple Restore deletes all your music and restores it to "good as new", maybe that might help or at least it might get it to mount then you could restart under OS X and try to see if it will mount then.
Not sure if this will work, but it's an idea (just).
