Do you know that one of the founders of Greenpeace has said that he was wrong to oppose nuclear power in the '60s and '70s?

Does it have an option to show the coalminers dying of black lung? Oh, right, there's no coal in this simulation. How about the people dying because of blackouts after you shut down all the coal plants and try to make it up with wind and solar?

The developer should consider more realism, such as:

The annoying noise of the wind turbines should make listening to music difficult.

The wind turbines should be shown blotting out an otherwise scenic view.

And, last but not least, the wind turbines should be shown hacking to death endangered owls, bats and other flying critters with their whirling blades of death.

for even more realism, be sure to add a couple thousand miles of power lines, to go with each of those sweet, quiet, 'scenic' power plants.

Oh right, nuclear energy does not use power lines... electricity is transmitted wirelessly...

And sure, owls get killed because they are so deaf and blind they can't see the slow-moving blade or hear the apocalyptic noise they make... and the bats are absolutely deaf so they can't hear their own echos or the horrible obnoxious noise! [/sarcasm]

This is a slick, small music player app that sort of illustrates energy choices with music as a vehicle. You can choose between nuclear and wind energy to power your music. A free music track by Ryuchi Sakamoto (YMO member) is included.

You also can play individuals tracks of your choosing in your music library, or with an Apple script, play from an iTunes playlist. I wasn't able to get the playlist to work correctly - it seemed to only play the first track in the playlist.

I was unable to see animations from the 'nuclear energy' option, other than the steam from the reactor. You are supposed to see some sort of decaying desktop. Perhaps it doesn't function with background photos as desktop images, as I have on my system. Or it takes hours to happen.

The wind energy option is interesting, and requires you to blow (make exhale noises) into your mike to get any power.

As an education medium, this doesn't do a very good job of illustrating the energy issues, and oversimplifies it. In reality, nuclear wastes have effects, but they aren't visually obvious. And comparing wind to nuclear energy doesn't convey a sense of the other options available like fossil fuels and solar. A solar option could be implemented by varying power according to the light that hits your iSight. The fossil fuel option could cause your desktop to get sooty.

Let's hope in version 2, they'll add these things or at least fix the problems I encountered.

No Energy - No Music. A really well made application with a nice and pedagogical GUI, complete with realistic animations and sounds. The choice of the energy supply is a main question, wort considering.
