SignatureProfiler is a plugin for Apple's Mail application that adds missing features from the way that signatures are handled and managed with your outgoing mail messages, especially if you have multiple mail accounts (and who doesn't these days). It was originally written to make up for the complete lack of signature management in versions 1.x of the program, but even 2.x is still missing some capabilities if you use several different accounts and what to share signatures between accounts.
What's New
Version 1.7.3:
Fixed an issue where the example signatures wouldn't appear unless the signature had been selected in the Signatures pane previously.
Fixed a crash that would occasionally happen at unrelated times.
Fixed a bug that made other plugins appear twice sometimes in the preferences.
Requirements
Intel, Mac OS X 10.6 or later

Does a lot and because of that, documentation could certainly be improved. But, I like what it does and think it actually works well. Never had a major problem and the developer has been very responsive fixing the couple of minor issues that I've had.
Just how essential is this? I had used it for a while, but when it suddenly got a price tag I reassessed. In fact I started rewriting my signatures in a more low profile way after reading a blog article criticising image heavy, bloated and html signatures that told you loads of stuff you did not want to know. That created issues for mobile users and slowly used up your bandwidth.
I uninstalled it
This is an outstanding and versatile tool. It is dead simple to do simple things, but I dinged it a bit for "Ease of Use" for doing some complicated things.
Case in point: I use it to randomly access my database of over 7,000 quotes, stored in MySQL. It took a bit of sleuthing, guessing, and contact with the developer (who was VERY supportive) to get it to work. Here's how it went:
I have a signature like this:
{script:nopre:"/Users/jan/bin/randquote"}
The script that fires up is this:
#!/bin/bash
echo -n `/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql --user=**** --password=**** --host **** --database=**** --raw --silent --batch < < -EnDoFcOmMaNd
SELECT
CONCAT(Quote, " -- ", AuthorFirst, " ", AuthorLast)
FROM Quotes
WHERE ${*:-UseInEmail = 'yes'}
ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1;
EnDoFcOmMaNd`
(The parameters marked "****" are site-specific.)
What I would REALLY like would be a way to pass a parameter into the script, so I could pick a random signature from among those with a particular keyword, for example.
The script thing sometimes times out or says NULL, but overall, this is a wonderful free utility and I highly recommend it to both novices and graybeard UNIX script junkies.
This signature tool is a must have in my work environment which has multiple users using the same email address/work station. It allows us to use the tail signature to easily switch between users providing a personal response to clients.
We use the Skype integration, iTunes track playing as well as the tail signature for each users name at the end.
