Planbook is software designed to manage a teacher's lesson plan book. In addition to the traditional functions of a planbook, this software allows you to link documents to your lessons (a word document describing a lab, for example), search your planbook and export your planbook to HTML or directly to an FTP or MobileMe server. 2.0 also allows you to track standards, units and tag lessons with keywords for advanced reporting.

What's New

Version 3.1:

Makes changes to prepare for a future release that will support the new Application Sandbox.
Fixes an issue where bumping lessons might not happen in the correct order when there are two+ meetings of the same class on the same day.
The name of custom days now appears on the weekly report.
Units are now exported in the correct order
Focus is now given to a lesson that's pasted via drag and drop
The daily report now remembers the dates of your last report and sets the date appropriately when you open the report.

I've read the reviews about how responsive the developer of this program is and I can't say I've had the same experiences. I have emailed him on numerous occasions about issues with his server. Specifically, uploading attachments and lesson plans which never show up on my home page that he hosts. There are frequent outages, i.e.

"We're sorry, but something went wrong.
We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly"

It's frankly embarrassing to tell my students to check my PlanbookConnect page, only to have them tell me there's nothing there.

For $35.00, it's a PASSABLE lesson planner but there are better and cheaper alternatives. Either support the program or drop it. Either way, I won't be using it anymore.

This software is fantastic. The developer is both supportive and innovative. He continues to steadily improve Planbook as a tool that helps teachers plan, but just as importantly, helps teachers communicate what has been planned to students and others.

This program is nice, but lack of a basic & simple feature. In fact, its very difficult to use without a display of the day of the week in the week view (Monday, tuesday ,etc..). This problem is also found in the reports. So during this academic year I've had to introduce the day of week by hand, a not very confortable solution to work with since you spend a lot ot time for this simple solution.

Planbook is one of the best applications a teacher can make use of on either the Mac or Windows platform. It has made scheduling and teaching much easier for me, and I rely on Planbook more and more for my courses. The developer is helpful and responsive. He also has a clear vision of where he wants the application to go in terms of future development. As a teacher himself, Jeff is able to approach the application of technology from a very practical perspective. Pricing is more than fair for such a useful bit of educational software.

Where is upgrade pricing for 2.0? I don't think it is nice to ask your customers to pay full price AGAIN just because you bumped it to 2.0 from 1.5.

Upgrading is free. Just enter your existing serial number and you are good to go.

Great program, especially for long range planning. Best support of any program I've ever seen. I emailed Jeff about an issue and heard from him within a few minutes. He said he would update the program to address the issue and did so the same night! I'd gladly pay more for programs to receive this type of support.

Since I am going to be a secondary Social Science teacher soon, I was looking for an excellent program to make lesson plans on my Mac. From looking at the demo, I can see there are many useful features for a teacher. I especially like the report features...

Along with Gradekeeper, this program will make my teaching life much easier.

Hi Jeff--

I downloaded the trial version tonight and I'm enjoying many of the features, but I'm also a little confused as to the overall setup and plan. Do you have a tutorial where I could learn some more specifics about Planbook? I've begun to enter in my first week of classes for August, and I'm just not sure that I'm doing it right. I would appreciate any help that you can give--thanks.

I am working on the help features for Planbook. There are a few screencasts (including getting started) currently available at the Planbook website (www.hellmansoft.com) that you'll find under the "Get Help" heading.

quali had trouble on 10 Jan 2007

Update to 0.8.4 does not fix the issue with course colour changes on Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2 GB DDR SDRAM running 10.4.8.

I am able to create courses and then select different colours within the course options dropdown, but when I attempt to apply changes nothing happens. When I try to cancel, nothing happens. App does not "freeze" but it does not permit me to "escape" from the course options dropdown.

Hi again.

Sorry the program is giving you problems. Does this bug occur with every planbook file that you create? Does the bug occur every time that you try to apply changes in the update courses window?

Could you do me a favor? Create a new, empty class in Planbook and send it to me before trying to change colors. Perhaps by looking at the file your version of Planbook creates I can track down the problem that you are having. My email can be found easily at: http://www.hellmansoft.com

I'd also encourage you to join the Yahoo Group listed above as it's often a quicker way to get help if you need it.

quali had trouble on 09 Jan 2007

Problems remain in the PPC implementation (0.8.3.1).

When changing colours of classes, the app would not accept the changes made. The only fix was to quit the app, but then the data file was useless-opening with a date of 16 August 2006 and then hanging. All of my data seems to have disappeared.
