I recently returned from a three-week Baltic vacation with many hundreds of photos. I wanted to quickly share the experience with friends, so I fired up Posterino and let it auto-fill a big poster with 100 photos (imported from iPhoto). I deleted a few inappropriate images, dragged several shots around to achieve a balanced look, reframed a few others, added a title, saved my creation as a PDF, and sent it off to my friends (via Dropbox). The entire production took maybe 15 minutes.
I'm very pleased with Posterino, and recommend it to anyone with lots of photos to exhibit to friends & family.

I've send a couple of suggestions to the developers, and was amazed to get a through and complete response a couple of hours later.
I'm impressed, and will continue to use and recommend!

At any rate, a shorter & more succinct answer:
If you want to make your calendars & posters in Photoshop - go ahead.
Its for you to determine if this is worthwhile to you. You have an opportunity to testdrive.
Posterino is pretty good for the price & is getting better all the time.
It has a few glitches, but nothing too insurmountable.
I can make my posters & calendars in Photoshop as well, but sometimes a more limited feature set & focused application is handier instead. Its a wrapper over the top of your images. For some projects I might use Photoshop, for others, Posterino is far more convenient.
Posterino uses clipping masks linked to your original images on your drive.
Takes the layered Photoshop images, pngs or jpegs.
One example: Posterino allows resizing of images inside a clipping mask & the masks themselves without affecting uniform borders, if you applied a white outline to make them look like oldstyle photos in the layout.
In Photoshop, this would most likely require a stroke & become part of the image (depending upon technique). Resizing of any images in a PS layout & especially transforms affect that image effect.

Its virtually always within one day,
if you are having a feature problem, whether its your own fault, or an application problem, the response is excellent.
I had what I believed was an issue with the newest calendar features, but the recommendation worked as advertised after contacting Zykloid. No issues. No glitches.
(There is an additional inspector & my machine was slow to show choices for the selected object for some reason. Perhaps it was impatience or operator error that appeared to cause the problem, its working well now).
Nonetheless, all is well.
To change calendar dates - you select the calendar month pane & go to Inspector > Object.

The only thing I haven't discovered yet (could be missing; could be me) is the capability of giving different croppings to the pix. Move l-r/up-down and zoom in/out. So I go back to the pic file and edit there. If I recall, Posterino either auto reflects my changes or I drag the photo in again. Either way, it's not hard.
I'm *fond* of this app. And my church likes the collage I made.

Might also mention: I liked that Posterino uses PSD files and that large files didn't slow it down.

This app is easy to use and the support is outstanding. If you're looking for something easy to use that does what it says it does, this is the app for you. Kudos to the developer(s) for a great job.

I didn't bother upgrading to Posterino 2 after it came out since the version I was using met all my needs. But after the last Snow Leopard upgrade, the application stopped working.
I provided some feedback (not expecting much since I was using an outdated version of the application) and behold I received feedback the very next day. I had not yet tried the suggested fix that the following day I was given a link to download and test a beta version that fixed the problem.
I couldn't be more impressed! a great application with excellent support.
