Letter Opener extracts attachments from winmail.dat files (was OMiC). When using Apple Mail, if you've ever received an e-mail that included an attachment called winmail.dat, you know the frustration of not knowing what was sent to you. When this comes from an employer or client, it's even more frustrating. That winmail.dat file may only be the rich text format (RTF) version of the message you're already seeing as plain text, in which case all you're missing is formatting that may not be important. But the file could contain an important graphic,

Version 4.0.2: Release notes were unavailable when this listing was updated.
I stand by my previous review for v.3.0.8 and can't imagine using mail.app without this add-on.
There is a cost to upgrade ($14.95) when a new OS comes out. With the frequency of new Mac OS rollouts this may seem prohibitive. In all fairness the developer has to rework the add-on for new versions and updates to mail.app, and I appreciate that he does so in a prompt fashion. In addition he offers a lifetime upgrade option, bringing the one time cost to $34.90, future-proofing Letter Opener. Considering that Lion itself is $29.99 I often hesitate to upgrade Letter Opener until I realize how much I miss it!
Upgraded to Lion and the new Mail, and needed to update Letter Opener. The only option is to buy the program--nothing about updates. So I emailed the developer - 7 times! No response in over a month to any email. No support.
No information on the web site or the download on how to remove the plugin. It is not located in the Mail > Bundles folder and Spotlight can't find it. Where is it hidden and how do your remove it? Nothing again from the developer!
The older version is named OMiC.mailbundle. It may be in System Library instead of the User Library. It most likely is in Bundles (Disabled) since only v4 works with Lion. That's where I deleted it from.
I had been trialing Letter Opener under Snow Leopard and found it to be a valuable plugin for Mail. I was ready to pay for a license when migrating to Lion but unfortunately version 4.0 is just to unstable. Mail would constantly crash when viewing messages encoded in TNEF.
Looking forward to a dot release to improve reliability.
Very disappointed by the developer. I gladly pay for an update if it provides new and useful features. However, I am not willing to pay just to restore compatibility with a new version of Apple Mail. I had to update several apps after upgrading to Lion, but LetterOpener is the only one that wants to cash in on that opportunity. Unfortunately, I going to remove this otherwise very handy tool...
Apple doesn't offer access do extend Mails functionality so doing a software like Letter Opener requires to reverse engineer the Mail application.
And with every new version of Mail this reverse engineering has do be done again. So the plug-in part has to be rewritten for every major OS update. That's the reason why this is a paid-upgrade.
In the Store you also find an "Lifetime Upgrade Option" which covers all new versions like 5.x, 6.x and so one.
but the upgrade price to make it compatible with Lion is more than double the purchase price of the 4 apps available at the Mac App store that do exactly the same job....
Not a great way to reward those of us who purchase shareware faithfully...
I am happy with this product combined with Letter Opener, it's a great compliment to Mail.app, promptly upgraded when Apple makes changes to Mail.app. Nothing worse than being stuck with plugins that you rely on that don't get updated in a timely fashion. Support has always been spot on and quick to respond. As a switcher, and once heavy Outlook user, I find this product indispensable. Basically if you want a quality, transparent product that will help bridge the gap between the Windows Outlook world and Apple's Mail.app, this is the product for you!

But the file could contain an important graphic, calendar entry or invitation, task, address book contact, Microsoft Outlook Note, or nested messages. In those cases, you may miss important communications. With Letter Opener in Apple Mail, the worry is gone. Letter Opener converts winmail.dat files on the fly, so you can actually see and use what the sender intended you to have. There's no fuss with Letter Opener, no need to drag the winmail.dat file onto another application or call upon several programs to help you. Once Letter Opener is installed, you can forget about it.
