You know what, I don't need that from anyone. And so today I find myself fondly remember the application for what it was and still might be, a solid and good newsgroup client. But beyond that I refuse to try it again as long as the original author is tied to it. I'll take my money somewhere else where customer service is as important as the quality of code.
My review of the author is not the same as my opinion of the software.

What many do not realize is that Thoth was built on many preceding FREE apps in the NewsWatcher "family" -- MT-NewsWatcher, YA-NewsWatcher et al. The arrogant jerk who "owns" it did little more than port it from OS 9 to OS X.
I also was a paid user back when it was the only stable choice for OS X. I am now a happy Unison user, and would not ever consider giving another penny to the schmuck responsible for Thoth.

I tip my hat to him.
This is about version 1.9.0 of Thoth.

Much hatred and outright ill-informed opinions expressed by reviewers below is the reason for this state of affairs. Simply put, not enough registrations have taken place to support continued development of the product and not enough interest has been shown by users for version 2.
Nevertheless Brian has rewarded loyal users who believe in fair payment for fair usage by updating Thoth for 10.7. Support under Lion however will be limited. The website is currently in hibernation. Users who wish to get 1.9 can only do so via an email with a request to register 1.8.5. They should receive an offer for a free upgrade to 1.9 shortly after. Those who registered 1.8.5 and received a refund can only try again (those who refused the refund got a link to 1.9).
1.9 and 1.8.5 are classic newsreaders - i.e., for those with an interest that goes beyond mere leeching of binaries. Both work very well.

I dunno if it's really just that; I mean, if you look at your following statement, none of those things are particularly attractive to users - They're not exactly reasons to buy. This is 2011 - Back in the day when YA/MT Newswatcher gave way to Thoth it was all a bit ragged, the web was new, we were using modems and some of us lucky enough to have ISDN were bundling for "blazing fast" 128K connections, but it's different now. People expect more, they want support (and are right to expect it if they pay) and want to know that the product they invest money (and time) in isn't going to just be mothballed at when the developer has another hissy fit or decides he doesn't fancy it any more. Who wants to buy SW with a load of caveats?

There's so much written about Brian that it's hard to judge the guy, so you can only look at his track record, and let's be honest, it's not a shining example. The irony of Brian's development challenges being related to not enough people paying for his SW is that the whole reason a lot of people (not all, admittedly) used Thoth was to download pirated copies of commercial SW anyway.
It'd be nice to see more competition in the Mac Newsreader arena, and to see Thoth really back on top, but it doesn't look like it's forthcoming.

I used Thoth for years, but with the advent of NZB files and index engines, the need to download and browse Usenet headers is long past. I suppose this would be good for up-loaders though.

Is this this dog still around? Is someone giving it CPR, pumping it full of IV fluids, or what?
Version 1.8.5 point freakin' 2? When is version 2.0 going to see the light of day?
Does anyone still check newsgroups? This is 2011 folks, Usenet is dead!

I've downloaded this update from all three locations. When Stuffit Expander processes the file, it produces nothing.

The solution is simple: uncheck the option to try to continue expanding in Stuffit expander, double click the .hqx to get the .zip and then you can double-click the .zip to get the app.
A bit tedious, but obviously a bug (one more :- ) in Stuffit expander.
