SynergyKM is a GUI wrapper around the Synergy project. The goal of SynergyKM is to give users the most "Mac like" experience while using Synergy. Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own display. SynergyKM consists of a preference pane and menu extra. The installer includes the latest version of Synergy, so no extra downloads are required.
Used Synergy and SynergyKM on Macs, PCs, Ubuntu ... all varying levels of operating systems ... for years! I love it... it's easily my favorite and most-used tool on every computer.
I fix comps for a living and being able to add a bunch of client machines to the mix just makes the fix-flow go so much faster.
SynergyKM just makes the features easier to access. If you want to get fancy and really customize things even more, you've got to go to the Synergy mothership.
See my troubleshooting note if you get an Applescript error after installing it.
Fixed the same problem as others -- the "Applescript system handler error" that keeps the control panel from launching, etc etc.
For me I went into my Sharing system preference and found that the Computer Name at the top had somehow been blanked out...normally you want a short one word (or hyphenated word) there which will identify your computer on a shared network. Once I filled in the name I wanted and exited, I was able to install and use SynergyKM.
If you don't have a name, add one. If you have one, change it to something simpler with no punctuation.
Go figure.
But this is the way the Synergy Server identifies each client so naturally your computer needs a name...
I've used Synergy and SynergyKM for several years now... love it love it love it love it love it love it love it. LOVE IT. Everytime I add a new machine to the mix and it starts working, it feels like nothing short of a techno-miracle. Full POWER.
I also got this fixed. Like MACERRIFIC suggested, I changed my computer name, but I also installed the latest version of Synergy+ on my mac in addition to SynergyKM. The latest Synergy+ can be found at http://www.synergy-foss.org/.
SynergyKM, where have you been all my life? I just spent an hour or two playing around with the command line synergy interface trying to get everything working with no success. I stumbled upon this program and was up and running in literally 5 minutes! Awesome!
My server is an XP machine. Clients are a Windows 7 RC computer and a Mac. Only thing I had to do to get it to work was use the servers IP address instead of its name. I had already set up the configuration of the screens on my server so everything was ready to go when I installed SynergyKM on the Mac. I now have a wall of monitors at my command. Five stars.
No matter what I did I could not get synergy to work on my new Mac Pro OS X 10.5.2. I tried every configuration I could find on the web, nothing worked. I'm comfortable working in a UNIX environment so that wasn't an issue. In every attempt I always got "Configuration not found".
I found a blog entry about SynergyKM, found the software and installed it.
Within a minute of install I was happily working with my XP machine using my Mac keyboard/mouse.
Overall, a nice piece of software for multiple platform usage, though beware that SynergyKM doesn't always play nice with other pieces of software.
On my old iBook G4, for example, using SynergyKM caused repeated kernel panics, especially on reboots. I found the issue to be between SynergyKM and iScroll2 (a two finger touch mod for older Powerbooks/iBooks). After repeated attempts to install and uninstall one, both, and one or the other, it became clear the issue only existed when they both were on the machine.
Since I had to choose, I chose iScroll2, and now utilize an alternative to Synergy called teleport (for Macs only). Been kernel panic free and loving it, though I do miss my cross platform playing with a single mouse and keyboard.
I ran into no such issues on my newer MacBook Pro (2.4GHz 15"), granted I have no need for iScroll2 on that machine and so no conflict.
My advice: If it works without conflict, it's great. If not, it's a pain in the arse (Tip: Be ready to Safe Boot OS X).
This program simply doesn't work. I've ran Synergy without a GUI successfully, as well as the wonderful QuickSynergy. But no combination of IP addresses or computer names can make this work.
I have been using synergy for a long time with a Vista machine as server and an iMac (10.6.4) as client, but decided to use the iMacas server instead. After many hours of "connection refused" (both from my MBP synergyKM-client and the Vista client), I finally got it to work.
All I needed to do was to remove all SCREEN ALIASES I had set up, and
after that it works great.
Tested this out with my MacBook being the server. Connected first from my G3 running 10.3.9, and that worked fine. Then I tested on 10.2.8, and it gave an AppleScript error during the install. I couldn't get System Preferences to see the prefpane, but was able to copy my preferences from my 10.3.9 partition and run the daemon manually, which did work. Up to this point I had been using my own AppleScript to start synergys/c on startup, but still had to set it up manually. SynergyKM really simplifies it (although it took me a while to figure it out - GUI is confusing).
I had a heck of a time trying to figure out how to get the client and the server to connect with each other, but I finally figured it out. On the server (the computer that will be remote controlled) you have to add a screen for the client (the computer to which the physical keyboard and mouse are attached) AND you also have to add a screen for the server. Just give each screen the same name as your client and server machines. No additional screen configuration is necessary.
I installed SynergyKM with no problems on my mac mini, but when I tried to install it on my macbook it allows me but when I went to configure it it gives me a AppleScript Error "System Preferences got an error: AppleEvent handler failed.(-10000)".
SynergyKM shows in my system preferences, but system preferences quits any time I try to open SynergyKM.
HELP!
both machines are running snow leopard and are up to date.
I can't seem to get synergykm working on snow leopard as a server. It works fine as a client, but won't work as a server. I have a MB pro (leopard), Ubuntu, and an IMac(snow leopard). When I run the MB pro as a server and the Imac as a client, it works. But when I try to make the Imac the server, it just sits there waiting for connections. I have the firewall off in the system prefs. Please help?
I am also having the same problem. SynergyKM runs as server on snow leopard (MBP 15") and it simply "waiting for connections" forever. No obvious information on the system log for nailing down the problem. Same settings work perfectly on leopard on the same machine, though.

Works great!
Usually: /etc/synergy.conf
or: /var/root/.synergy.conf
I use /etc/synergy.conf and it works fine.

Does anyone have a solution?
