Afloat is a small extender that adds both useful window management commands and a little eye candy to most Mac applications. It adds always-on-top, transparency, Spaces window management and more.
What's New
Version 2.4:
  • Afloat is now fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.7, including full compatibility with sandboxed apps.
  • Fixed several bugs that involved Afloat only dragging away, floating or making transparent only a part of the window. Afloat can now be disabled on a per-app basis using the Terminal.

I don't use the overlay feature much (it's main feature), but I LOVE the ability to click-n-drag a window from anywhere and the ability to resize a window from anywhere. I use those features constantly.

Tried using with Lion 10.7. Every time I reboot or shut down, everything disappears. App is gone. Tried emailing but never got an answer. Anybody else have this problem?

Nevermind, had an old version 2.2. With 2.4 all old apps that used to work now afloat again! It does indeed work. 10.7.3 with simbl 0.9.9

Great app but indeed does not work with all apps under Lion. Particularly with Preview which I was using it mostly with. Looking forward to an update.

Does not work for all apps in Lion. Needs to be updated. Don't let this great app die!

This is a little-known gem of a utility. I don't necessarily use it all the time, but when I do, it's tremendously handy. Like others, I do wish there was some way to make the settings "stick." I'd use it a lot more if I didn't have to manually configure an app's windows each time it launches. Yes, I'm lazy. (Make it scriptable?)

I would happily pay for this enhancement. In fact, I should go to the dev's site now and see if I can donate something.

EXCELLENT, what an awesome app. You should get a nobel peace prize for this ... can't believe Apple's programmers can leave out something so simple but then again they always leave out lots of simple stuff all over the OS and expect 3rd party developers to finish their work for them.

I love this app, but I wish it could remember its settings between launches of an app. I have to manually set up a window from scratch each time I open it. Aside from that, it's tremendous!!

MacLudwig had trouble on 29 Jun 2009
I have problems getting afloat to work in most applications. The Afloat option, for example, is available for iChat but not for any of the MsOffice applications. So, I am unclear what sort of applications Afloat can and cannot keep afloat. Or do I need change some preferences to extend that number of applications that can stay afloat.

Nope, but with Snow Leopard coming out there will be a push to recode all Carbon-based apps in Cocoa (Finder, for instance, is now entirely in Cocoa in SL). I have no idea if Afloat will work in Snow Leopard at all, though. Keep your fingers crossed.

kombi64 had trouble on 10 Jan 2007
Installed it on MacOS 10.4.5 and tried to enable Afloat Beta 0.4 through Sys. Prefs.

Everything crashed. =)

My preferences for Safari zapped. =)

I've rebooted, reenabled Afloat - fruitlessly! and menubar started to blink.

I've decided to uninstall it, but haven't find the Uninstall option.

Guys, this is wrong. Please, help me with uninstallation and release stable version ASAP!
