Firefly music server makes it possible to share your music library over the network with other computers, and with compatible devices like the Roku™ SoundBridge™ and Pinnacle™ SoundBridge™.

The server runs in the background when you are logged in to your computer, and does not require your music library software to be open in order to function. All common configuration options are available from the Firefly icon that will be available in System Preferences after installation.

If you share the folder containing your iTunes library file, Firefly
What's New
Version 1.0b2:
  • Fixed a bug that caused the Preferences pane crash if the user's library name contained a non-ASCII character.
  • Fixed a problem where clicking the Firefly logo in the Preferences pane failed to open the fireflymediaserver.org web page.
  • Eliminated a spurious "restarting" message if the Preferences pane was closed with unsaved changes, but the server was not running.
  • Fixed a problem in the installer that prevented installation in non-admin accounts. Installer now requires administrator password to install.
  • This version of Firefly, combined with the RC3 (2.5.171) release of SoundBridge software, now properly handles protected AAC files, and will properly skip files un-checked in iTunes if that option is enabled on the SoundBridge.
  • This version features improved performance when scanning the iTunes library XML file.
  • The server features a new and updated web user interface.
  • Server does not attempt to transcode Apple Lossless files when playing to an iTunes client.
  • Various other fixes.
Known Issues
  • This version of Firefly only runs on MacOS 10.4 or later. We expect to release a version soon with support for 10.2 and 10.3.
  • The System Preferences pane is currently only localized into English.
  • This version of Firefly supports streaming of MP3, AAC, AIFF and WAV content. The Firefly server architecture also supports "transcoding" of other formats into ones recognized by the player. Support for transcoding several popular formats is coming soon.
  • The first time the server starts, it may take several minutes to do the initial scan of your library, especially if the library is large. If you try to quit the server during this time, the attempt may time out, leading to a warning message in the System Preferences pane. Similarly, if you were to open the pane shortly after the server starts, it might report that the server is not running.
  • The System Preferences pane does not properly handle the case where there may be more than one copy of Firefly running on a given computer. This should only be an issue if more than one user is logged in via Fast User Switching. Although the Start/Stop button will work properly, the button that enables viewing the advanced configuration web page may open the wrong URL.
  • The System Preferences pane may not detect a failure of Firefly to launch when the Start button is clicked. If this happens, you may see the message "Starting Firefly…" remain on the screen. You can close and re-open the pane to reset the state. This would typically be an issue if you have hand-edited the configuration file, or if you manually set a server port to a port that is already occupied.
  • The advanced configuration web page may complain that the configuration file cannot be edited because it is not writable. This is a bug that is being investigated.
  • If you manually edit the configuration file to add multiple music directories, the System Preferences pane will display incorrect information in the Library Location. However, it should not disturb your settings if you don't try to use the pane to change the location.

  • Fixed a problem where clicking the Firefly logo in the Preferences pane failed to open the fireflymediaserver.org web page.
