After allowing the video player to download a file completely I found that changing the *.gvi extension to *.avi allowed it to open in VLC (my preferred player) just fine. Getting Info on it revealed that the file is divx encoded... but I'm still not thrilled over Google's forced "middle man" approach... :p

this however is not
it is totally devoid of any features, it wont open any files except those from google video - and i could not even get it to work with them - kept saying connection error (even though i think that it is based on vlc - that many of you may know plays about every format in the world)
i was hopping for a vlc player with a slightly nicer interface and with integrated google video search that would let me view all the video from google video in thumbnail, list with customisable columns etc....
instead it just send me to the goggle video page - i then have to watch some of the clip while it loads in safari before choosing two options to get it to attempt to load in google video player
overall - dreadful - not what i expect from goggle, its propiariatry, very poor, very closed and works badly
come on google - you can do much better - a player just for google video and is very poor does not help anybody
The website sells videos in a special format, this program plays them back. There has been a Windows version available for a few months, but this is the first release of the Mac version.
It's not based on VLC, and is not designed to play any video format other than gvi/gvp, which is what video.google.com uses.

It seems to be just Flash Video...

The Google Video Player's job is to play files downloaded from http://video.google.com, particularly the premium content that you actually pay for, and can't just watch in the web page.
The search function steers you to the website, because that's where you can find shows to buy and download.
