1Password is a password manager that uniquely brings you both security and convenience. It is the only program that provides anti-phishing protection and goes beyond password management by adding web form filling and automatic strong password generation. Your confidential information, including passwords, identities, and credit cards, is kept secure using strong encryption.

1Password fully supports major web browsers, including Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. All browser extensions share the data stored in the keychain which means you never need to manually copy your passwords

I love this app, syncs nicely to my iPhone and Safari extension plays nicely with the main App.

Only complaint I have is that I live in the UK, and some of the options on the wallet are very United States centric. For example, my bank has a sort code, I can't find an option for that.

Still a darn good app but ..
For many apps, 1password and a-likes are not needed anymore because AppStore takes care of protections.
I only used it for registration serials. Website passwords can be held by Safari, Firefox, ...

So the question remains - do you still need this in the future?

The answer is - Yes.
One of the great things about 1Password is its ability to synchronize between machines (Macs, iOS Devices, Android, Linux, and Windows) using DropBox and/or Wi-Fi. The DropBox option gives you access to all of your registration, password, secure notes, etc. via a web browser so you don't even have to have your own device with you.
This is an excellent application that will be useful for a long time to come.

Also, kudos to the developers for excellent response time to a recent query.

Great, just great. The glorious browser integration just kills off all other apps in the field of password management. Dropbox integration and the robust syncing with the lovely iPad app ($10 extra) is the banana on top.

But there was a brief dark time, when the evil Safari 5.1 (and Lion) came out and 1Password rewrote the extensions. And the extension for a few weeks was very bad. Chaos and visions of hooded men with scythes erupted on the web and the 1Password forums. I even wrote an insulting forum post (sorry evangelists) But they fixed it and all is good and even better than before.

1Passwrod is pretty much the gold standard for password protection on the Mac. Great integration with the apps for iOS devices, and it is continuously being improved. I've been using it for about 18 months now and recommend it to everybody.

The reason for this review is that a few days ago I had a problem with the Safari plugin. My first real problem with the app, and I couldn't solve it myself. So I mailed their customer support, and within a few hours got a friendly reply that a) solved my problem, and b) refrained from pointing out that it was caused by my own stupidity.

Good app, great support: Worth every penny.

I have one feature request: Would it be possible to add a language selector to the Preferences? My Mac is set to German, but I'd like to use 1Password in English. I know I can just delete the localizations, but I'd prefer an "official" way?

Thanks!

For now though, you may be able to get the desired result using another application:

I think it's because it takes longer to push out updates on the appstore, as they have to go through Apple's approval process beforehand. At least I hope that's the reason. Having said that, I rarely, if ever, come across any problems with the app, so I don't really mind not receiving constant updates.

Hey guys! Thanks for bringing this up. I am sorry for the confusion.

The 3.8 (website) and 3.9 (MAS) versions are nearly identical, and the versions are mainly different for tracking and support purposes.

That said, as taja pointed out, there is an approval process with the App Store. For this reason we have open betas for the 3.8 versions, release them after they are tested as stable, and then incorporate these changes over time into a comprehensive 3.9 update.

If there are specific changes you are looking forward to in the MAS version, it is likely that we are already hard at work on them. But in any case, please do not hesitate to contact us via our support site with any requests or feedback. We'd love to hear from you:

I hear you, Gary! I am sorry for the trouble.

It sounds like something is causing a connection issue between the 1PasswordAgent/Helper and the extension. Common causes of this are situations where something is preventing the Helper from installing or running at all or simply blocking connections. If you have firewall, proxy, or security software running that could be a good pace to start looking, but the best thing to do is head over to our support site so we can get some more information about your setup and get you back your workflow:

http://support.agilebits.com

Probably a good thing to do to get the ball rolling is to create a private discussion and attach a Diagnostics Report:

http://support.agilebits.com/kb/troubleshooting/create-a-diagnostics-report-to-help-agilebits-help-you

Please note the differences in generating the report based on whether you are using the Mac App Store version or the version from our website. I look forward to hearing back from you. :)

Just a head's up that you guys should really change the command-K shortcut for logins. It conflicts with command-k in textedit to insert links and command-k for several other apps including the Finder for connecting to servers and QuickTime 7 for pulling up A/V controls.

I cleared it out of 1Password in the preferences, but I had to look at my console to figure out what was causing me to lose command-K in all these apps.

Others who might not know to look in their console would just be stuck. You should change the default to something else and/or make it not conflict with other apps.

Hey, Cowicide! Thanks for the heads up. I think you must have set that shortcut yourself a while back and forgot though. If you are referring to "Fill Login keyboard shortcut" or "Show extension popup keyboard shortcut" (under 1Password Preferences > Logins) these are set to ⌘ and ⌥⌘ respectively by default. Fortunately, these are customizable no matter what else you have running on your system with active keyboard shortcuts. I hope this helps! :)

ginger.lindsey had trouble on 11 Sep 2011
So far, I like this product very much, but there is one "hitch". Ironically, however, all of the logins that I have entered into 1 Password so far work with one exception: the one that I created yesterday (or possibly the day before) under the user name of "glindsey" for the Agile Forums.

Apparently, I accidentally hit "create new account" or something and now, when I try to use my login, it says, "this name is already in use". Same for my email account!

Since I 'm not exactly sure what I did to create this problem, I have no idea how to fix it, and I don't want to try to create a new account, only to have the same thing happen to me again.

Would you please fix my account, so that I may log in under this current login? As a newbie to this software, I have infinite questions and suggestions for the development team, and I really do need access to this forum. Without it, I am never going to get the full benefit of this wonderful piece of software.

safari-extension://com.agilebits.onepassword-safari-2BUA8C4S2C

Data not available. Please open and unlock 1Password app to update extension data.

I've got a few nice screenshots for you, along with a diagnostics report. Shall I add that I'm using, as of now (I've tried all of them since the Lion launch) the latest version, 3.7.2: I'm not spilling my time to get advised to resort to using the very version I'm on now.

Since the upgrade to Lion, this thing never worked. It either popped up a scramble of out of allignment signs and letters, checkboxes and goodness knows what when clicked the "1P" button in Safari - or nothing at all, or asked for the password to be typed (which I did, but, as you may understand, to no avail - never managed to unlock the thing) - and now, having gotten rid of all my backups (the last one stored elsewhere safely), completely uninstalled the "app", uninstalled and reinstalled the Safari extension a hundred times or so, deleted the scramble from Safari's Extension folder (user library), reinstalled the app - tabula rasa - once again - and my accomplishments - or should I say, your program's - are as follow:

safari-extension://com.agilebits.onepassword-safari-2BUA8C4S2C

Data not available. Please open and unlock 1Password app to update extension data.

Not much of a progress, or dare you beg to differ?
By the way, to the chaps at Agile Bits. Be reasonable enough not to give users duly critical of your app at its current form (it used to be the best. It is rubbish since Lion) thumbs down. That sort of blatant self-promotion does alienate a few, myself included. You don't want your former customers to see you in the same light as the MacDefender's authors are seen, do you?

Find a solution to this mess before half your users abandon you.

I'm on the verge of giving up on this thing.

Hey there, Ego! At first glance it sounds as if the 1PasswordAgent running is for an older version. Please try Help > Troubleshooting > Restart Agent to see if that helps, and make sure you quit Safari completely ( ⌘ ⌥ Q ) and unlock the main 1Password application.

I also noticed your description: "popped up a scramble of out of allignment signs and letters, checkboxes and goodness knows what". This sounds like you may be running a SIMBL plugin that is causing a conflict. If so, please try removing it to see if this resolves your issue.

Failing that, please send us a Diagnostics Report. You can generate one in 1Password on your Mac by going to Help > Troubleshooting > Diagnostics Report... Just attach this to an email (support@agilebits.com), and be sure to include any other details or screenshots you can as it will help us understand the problem better. For example, you didn't mention the extension version you are using. We will get to the bottom of this. :)

SIMBL.osax was the culprit. Once removed, all the 1Password issues (incl. the unclickable "1P" button issue, the scramble I referred to in my earlier post, the failure of the "Enter" key press to show the logins for the - really, any given - login page) got instantly resolved.
Some will have, as you know better than myself, the SIMBL.osax installed in ~/Library/ScriptingAdditions/, others - in /Library/ScriptingAdditions/.

That's awesome, Ego! Thanks for clarifying. That sounds like slightly different symptoms than we have seen in the past, so it may be a different SIMBL plugin that was causing this, where removing SIMBL altogether disabled it. I would love to hear what is/was present in /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins or ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins on your system, as that would likely reveal the specific cause.

In my general Library "Scripting Additions" folder I had these nested:

- Satimage.osax (v. 3.3.0)

- TotalFinder.osax (v. 1.2.1 now. I recall, somewhat vaguely, I updated it a couple of days ago).

- SIMBL.osax (v. 0.9.7)

In my User Library "Scripting Additions" folder I had:

- Default Folder X Addition.osax (the current version?)

- FolderGlance.osax (v. 3.0.2)

- Paperless Addition.osax (v. 2.0.4)

It appears, none of the scripting additions installed, with the exception of the SIMBL.osax, interferes with 1Password Safari extension operation. Confirmed: SIMBL.osax is the sole culprit here. There may be more, but thank goodness not amidst the ones installed in my system.

Thank you for your infinite effort (for the most part, that is. I've duly expressed my solemn reservations on the hunting license thing, but at least you don't actively help the scum harass or kill animals): I've seen developers cease their work on some excellent apps, following poor or insufficient reception by their respective user base. But you obviously keep outdoing yourselves, making therewith lots of users' happy (in regards related). It would be a shame if, with as much effort as you put into the development of 1Password, the app did not become the most popular, most appreciated password management solution for Macintosh, iOS and since a while, Windows, users.

I didn't want to put this in reviews/comments because I really like 1Password (when it works), and I understand that it is not necessarily the developers fault that it is not currently working in Safari 5.1.
But I really cannot understand the reasoning behind the 'new' ios looking window in the extension. Sure it might look 'cute' to some but as far as I'm concerned it's complete garbage. Takes up room, can't search and well, just looks really cheap. Please bring back the previous interface.

While I am not certain that this is the proper venue (Troubleshooting), we definitely appreciate the feedback!

We have heard both from folks who really like the new look and those (such as yourself) who would like a more subdued approach. because if this, we have gone back to the drawing board and are working on a redesign that hopefully takes all of the feedback into consideration. You can see a sneak peek on our blog (http://blog.agilebits.com), and we would love to hear from you. :)

Akanico had trouble on 22 Jun 2011
I was waiting for this update before updating Firefox to the 5.0 and I'm surprised to see it doesn't work for me.
Tried to remove the extension then install it again but no more luck.
Working in FF5 for anyone ?

Hey Akanico,

I'm sorry that you're having this problem. Please take a look at my forum post here which describes the troubleshooting process:

http://forum.agile.ws/index.php?/topic/5166-firefox-5-support-added-in-1password-360/

If you are still having trouble, please start a new thread in the forums or send us an email at support@agilebits.com, and we will get it resolved for you as quickly as possible. Be advised that Firefox 5 is not supported at this time in Mac OS X Leopard, though. Support for Firefox 5 was added in 1Password 3.6.0 which requires at Snow Leopard or Lion.

Thanks Khad.
As a matter of fact I found out what was the problem. I had both extensions installed (ff4 + ff5).
Once I removed the one for ff4, it was all good.

In case somebody else runs into this issue, it is generally caused by having compatibility checking disabled in Firefox. If compatibility checking is on, Firefox should simply disable the incompatible extension. :)
