What's New
Version 7.0.15054.722853:
Provides support for new versions of Linux kernels:
Linux 3.2 kernel (used in Ubuntu 12 and others)
Fedora 15 kernel.
Requirements
Intel
64-bit processor
Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later
2GB of RAM (4GB recommended to run Windows 7)
At least 700 MB of space available on the boot volume for Parallels Desktop installation
I'm just not sure what you're referring to. All the Parallels updates we list at MacUpdate are downloaded, tested, and verified by our staff using both direct download links and the in-app updater.
You need to make sure your copy of Parallels 7 is activated & registered to get the updates within the app.
If you're not seeing them, contact Parallels support.
As a long time user of both Parallels and VM Fusion (from version 1.0 days), I think I'm very objective about both. My experience with the latest of each (Parallels 7 and Fusion 4.1) is that Parallels offers the best experience for Windows VMs, and Fusion offers the best experience for Mac VMs. Fusion was already better/faster at running Mac Guest OS VMs, but now that it supports installing the client version of Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion, it's even more convenient.
For those who haven't heard, Fusion 4.1 allows you to install client versions of Leopard and Snow Leopard (server version is still supported, but NOT required). And the speed is almost equal to native. Great for sandbox testing.
Although parallels is very good, VMware fusion has up to ante.
VMware fusion now allows you to install and run client versions of Leopard, Snow Leopard, or Lion. Parallels only allows you to run client versions of Lion only. You cannot run client versions of Leopard or Snow Leopard on Parallels. This is a big plus for VMware fusion.
Therefore, until this feature is added to parallels, I will withhold the additional two stars.
I really doubt this feature will be added to Parallels, since VMware has now said it is a mistake and Fusion 4.1.1 kills the client versions. This is actually Apple's call.
While I like Parallels better than Fusion, I have to say, I don't like their upgrade policy.
I purchased Parallels Desktop 5 to run the one Windows-app I need to work, Windows XP, no need for fast graphics or anything else. After Parallels Desktop 6 came out, I got a "please upgrade"-message with every start up, which was terribly annoying. I checked the "please don't show that"-box and even contacted the horrible Parallels support, but there was no solution, it kept popping up.
Then I upgraded to Lion, and Parallels said it wouldn't work without updating to version 6. I read on the website of Parallels that it is impossible to run version 5 on Lion.
Funny.
With a little script, Parallels 5 runs under Lion, with no problems.
Very funny.
So, I cannot recommend Parallels, unless you are willing to pay sort of a "tax" to let your (purchased) software run.
If you have a 32-bit Mac it's pretty old so your argument is lame. It's like me saying, "So not I have to ditch my still perfectly working G4 Sawtooth just so I can run Intel apps, wtf?" Parallels, Fusion, VirtualBox are all very good options, use the one that works for you.
Heck I posted benchmarks for Fusion 4 v Parallels 7 over a month ago and showed that. They're about even except Parallels beats Fusion down in the 3-D graphics tests.
I just updated Parallels to this latest version, and now it won't let me run my boot camp virtual machine, saying that I have kernel elements from an older version installed. It leads me to a "Problem ID 41" error message and directs me to their website where I can find no information. I have not had this problem before until this latest update. I am running Windows 7 on an i7 MacBook Pro with 8GB of ram.
At the risk of sounding like an idiot...I have a simple comment(s), then a question: I bought Parallels for my son to use on his new MacBook. Being a Mac guy from day 1, I know nothing about Windows -- so when I read in the description "everything you need to run Windows on your Mac," I jumped at making this purchase, since my son has Dreamweaver and Illustrator for Windows. Now...it seems I have to purchase Windows for the Mac...? If that's the case, I would call this "false advertising." How can it be "everything I need" -- if I have to purchase Windows also? Why would the developer of the software assume that someone with a Mac has Windows. I hope I am "all wet"...and there is a simpler solution.
Really Fast, but some problems writes to disk, and lost my bootcamp disk a every mac restart. (MacPro 2Disk RAID0 Mac + 1 Disk BootCamp) same issur than version 5…
The update checker within Parallels does not work. Try this link if necessary http://download.parallels.com/desktop/v5/en_us/parallels/update4/ParallelsDesktop-parallels-en_US-5.0.9370.589435.dmg
After updating Parallels I could not save my Visual Basic 6 projects in a shared folder (Documents folder) from within Visual Basic 6 interface. I tried several things including reboot Windows 7 and mac, reinstall tools etc.
To have Visual Basic 6 working as before I had to install an older build of Parallels 5 that I fortunately had.
I recently bought the MacUpdate bundle and Parallels 5.0 was the driver behind the purchase decision. I installed Parallels, inserted the activation key, and now its telling me my trial period is over!!! URGH!!
Did I not read the fine print when purchasing??? I could of got a free test drive of the product without spending $49.
Has anyone else been able to compress or resize a vm install? When I do so Parallels complains that I have snapshots installed even when I don't. Of course tech support refuses to answer my question about this.
P.S. I would NOT recommend this product (even with the bundle version) to people that frequently use tech support.

With WIndows Application sharing disabled, the program seems to remove any documents/aliases/folders from the right side of your Dock, claiming it's removing the Windows Application folder on launch (sometimes second launch). Has anyone found a fix for this?

Or pick up a cheap 100 bucks pc from my charity shop and use that?
Difficult decision, if there was a 32bit version maybe I would spend 79 bucks and be 20 bucks better off.

VMWare Fusion is a bit cheaper and not that bad.
I would suggest to try both before buying.
