Sauerbraten is a free multiplayer/singleplayer first person shooter, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS. Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eyecandy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine.
The engine supporting the game is entirely original in code & design, and its code is Open Source (ZLIB license, read the docs for more on how you can use the engine).

Phenomenal! Unbelievable that such a game is free. They have added in the latest release a bunch of new maps, and most of the servers available under the multiplayer menu have added these maps to their servers. The ONLY reason I have given Stability a 4 is that when quitting the game, it crashes. Every time. Other than that?
Absolutely great! I have had no flaws with this game whatsoever, and it never ceases to amaze me. It is great playing on oversees servers because there is no click-delay between click and shoot, which is original compared to other FPS-style games. Everything about this game is awesome (especially the music! I love the music. I don't know who wrote it, or who has the rights to the music, but its incredible! The drummer is fantastic). There is only one thing which bothers me slightly: is there any way of changing the crosshair? I have managed to resize it with the crosshairsize N code, but it would be great if we can choose colours and design for it.
All-in-all, an incredible game. I was very surprised to see that a game of this stature is free!
Man!!!!....this is awesome...and FREE!!!
Open Arena and Sauerbraten (...mit Bratwurst!)....
this two frag apps rule...har..har..har. Ours of fragging fun.
When starting the game after moving the app to my App Folder The error message says I should put it in a path that does not have "weird characters" Very Strange!!! I then moved it to my desktop but I got the same error message,I really don't understand this message and I would like some help as I can't run the game.
Possibly you copied the sauerbraten.app without the data files, or changed the folder structure around it... Post support queries to: http://www.cubeengine.com/forum.php4

In addition to the FPS game which is in a very playable state, the engine is being used for an RPG which is in the preproduction phase.

Good controls, very nice levels, and the whole playing experience is just great fun. Recommended and indeed incredible that it is free.
Minor gripe: plays fine but the application crashes when quitting (on Mac 10.6.4).

Here's the direct link to the file at the mirror I accessed:
http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/sauerbraten/sauerbraten_2008_06_17_ctf_edition_macosx.dmg
You might want to run diskutility and check your file system. Perhaps repairing permissions will solve the problem.
Also, try downloading the .dmg again. If you can, try using another machine...
