WebSMS is a nice alternative to send SMS from your carrier's Web site. It automates all the boring stuff. It's easy as the cell phone: compose, click, sent!

It gives you one-click access to your mobile contacts from the Address Book. Use a different phone color for each one of your frequent contacts. It even supports CAPTCHA's.

Released under an open source license, it can be extended to support new carriers writing a plugin. A thoroughly commented template lets you create your own plugin in a minute.

Addendum: I just tried the VSMS widget, which only works with Vodafone Italia numbers, and it successfully displays its CAPTCHA challenge and then transmits the SMS to the destination phone.

Version 2.9.10

Version 2.10 seems to have corrected the problem with Vodafone Italia's CAPTCHA challenge, which now is rendered visibly instead of appearing as a "missing image" question-mark icon.

No longer works with Vodafone Italia: the CAPTCHA image displays as a question-mark icon only, making it impossible to authenticate one's attempt to send. I reverted to ver. 2.9.9, which used to work and it also now is afflicted with the same problem.

I used the developer's contact email web form on the emeraldion website to report the problem and have not received any response (not even an acknowledgement).

is this app similar to CHIKKA? http://www.chikka.com/

Version 2.9.4

Chikka requires you to register on their website. WebSMS doesn't require any kind of registration of its own (though you still to have an account with a cellphone service provider with a web login and password).

Version 2.9 seems to have lost the ability to pick up mobile phone numbers from AddressBook to send messages to!

Reportedly, the updated AddressBook plugin doesn't work under Leopard. I'll investigate this issue when able to.

I'm on Tiger, not Leopard. Importing from AddressBook worked up through ver. 2.8.1(? which preceded 2.9).

BTW www.emeraldion.it has been down for several days, showing only a page that says

Spiacente, questo sito é temporaneamente disabilitato!

The emeraldion.it website will be down until March 1st, sorry for the inconvenience.

Please refer to http://websms.origo.ethz.ch for WebSMS downloads and to http://groups.google.com/group/websms for general discussions.

Nice application,
I wish it could remember the provider settings by default when I recall the widget back from its "dormient" dashboard dock without re selecting all the time.

The developer is very careful to details and make this widget as compat as possible, if we see the many features it includes (proxy, language choice, colours and modules update), really clever.

It gets truly frustrating on Alice on alice account:
no service wrong key code when it's not,
sometime i have to retype the password in the account to make it work again, but by looking at the many updates the developer released, tracking up the constant changes of the main providers, i assume it's Alice itself causing this annoyance giving a hard time to the developer.

Great software.
Make very easy for people with free sms service from: Alice, TIM, Vodafone and Tin to send message.

Only one complain.
A way to know that your massage was sent.
