Wimp has been discontinued
Email me when discounted:

Wimp helps you keep tabs on your computer's ip address. Wimp runs a small program in the background which sends an e-mail to the address of your choice whenever the ip address changes.

Though not the original intention, Wimp can also act as a very crude theft recovery mechanism. If installed on a computer that is stolen, Wimp will continue to e-mail you with an ip address whenever the thief connects your computer to the internet. Presumably, law enforcement agencies can then use this information to get the precise location of your computer.

Wimp is for personal use only. Please contact us if you wish to more...

Very nice little piece of software. Would anyone try to steal my Macbook, I could at least hope to recover it. Would gladly pay a few euro's. Alas, the server is offline. Weeks have allready become months.

Here's what you see when you go to their main page today:

We are currently experiencing major problems with our web host due to unexpected demand and server overload. We are working hard to fix the problem as fast as we can, but it may be a few weeks.

In the meantime, PLEASE DISCONTINUE USE OF WIMP. We will release a new version soon to fix this problem.

Thank you for your patience!

is it me or do you think this program is a small security risk allowing the developer to log all IP's into a log? It would provide instant access to hundreds of personal ip addresses.

i'm a bit skeptical on this one. Would rather be able to input my own pop server so that i know the only person viewing my ip is myself.

Please refer to the documentation. We absolutely DO NOT keep a "log" of ip or email addresses. Everything, including emailing, is handled by the server; your information is immediately discarded thereafter. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further concerns. -GreenKeeper Software

While I agree that having the option to specify a server to use would be a sweet feature I am not gonna whine if its never added.

If you have concerns about the devs or anybody else logging information, why not just set up a dummy hotmail or other email account for wimp to send its notifications to? Your IP address isn't static afterall (otherwise why are you using wimp or similar software) and unless you are for some reason putting your system outside of any firewalls or have messed with security settings you would probably be better off worrying about what information websites are recording/ trying to do to your system rather than what could be recorded with this.

By the way devs, wimp rocks. Please keep working on it. Thanks to this I don't have to pay to have a static IP through Comcast. ^_^

Another way to always know your IP Address is to set a free Dynamic DNS service at http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/. A client for the service can be found at MacUpdate: http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/6999. See the first link for an explanation of the service and how it works.

Your public IP address is meant to be just that... public. If you believe the security of your information or your system relies on this being hidden you are very wrong.

This program is amazing; not only is it something that I've been looking for for quite some time now, but it also works flawlessly and, while headless, it takes up virtually no resources. Truly an amazing piece of software--highly recommended for anyone on a dynamic IP address.

Wow.

I've spent hours futzing with other options over the past few months. The most reliable so far, DynDNS, works well for the most part but now and then the IP doesn't update correctly and I can't connect remotely. Now I finally have something small, out of the way, and EFFECTIVE to connect whenever and wherever I want.

Worked beautifully.
