Tried converting a small .wma to mp3:
"Unable to encode files in the selected format"
.mov to mp3?
"Unable to encode files in the selected format"
.aiff to .mp3?
"Unable to encode files in the selected format"
What a piece of crap!!

Replying to my own comment... every time I press "Convert" Little Snitch alerts that Switch is trying to connect my computer to a website!

So is that why Switch doesn't do the simplest tasks, because Little Snitch disallows the connection?? Into the trash it went.

Switch downloads needed codecs, which is why LittleSnitch is alerting you. If you block that connection it can't convert the files, and you get that error.

I tried this and when it's allowed to connect it works perfectly, and is pretty quick too. I've been using this to convert .wma files. No issues at all.

From the website: "The free version...includes most common audio file formats."

No mention that the app has to call out from your computer to work. Any modern developer should be aware of Little Snitch. Why doesn't dev mention the app is calling out every time you use it...?

I agree with you. I know this is what it does because I was also using Little Snitch and also had the failures converting files. When I saw the dialog that it was downloading codecs I unblocked it and it worked.

I received an album of files in ogg format. First time I encountered this file type. Switch converted to mp3 quick and easy. Added to iTunes library with no problem. The user interface is easy to understand - I especially liked the feature that allows you to select the bitrate for encoding.

What is that Internet connection the app tries to make? What's downloading? Couldn't find any documentation about it, but LittleSnitch told me about it!

I think it is just downloading the codecs needed to read and convert the files.

Just wondering what good the free version is, when you can do this with iTunes and/or Quicktime for free?

It is a valuable tool of you cannot get the file to load into iTunes or QuickTime b/c of it's initial format. Especially with .wma audio

I guess there are a couple of WMA types that might bring up that issue. Since I avoid those and have codecs installed into QT for most of the others, and one or two (ape) with console tools, I've never had to deal.
Cool.
Thanks.

Seems to work well, but after using it once it won't start again; the aplication bounces in the dock once and quits. This is on a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.4.8

the programs works fine. the only thing is that before converting every song it asks to install flip4mac though i have it already installed. but if you click ok, then it works just fine. the program does what it is supposed to do. it is simple and the user interface is ok. the program is not amazing but it is definitly not crap.

Cerebrl had trouble on 23 Oct 2009
This app has worked like a gem for a while, but now it crashes every single time I try to convert a wma to anything else. I have the latest flip4mac, latest switch and the latest OS. It will convert other formats, just not wma. The only error on console is "exited abnormally: bus error". Anyone else having problems?

I ran into the same issue with .aac/m4a conversion.

This is what their customer support dpt. told me:

quote

there has been some errors made with our installation of the aac encoder.
for the moment might I suggest you use the quicktime format mov.
If you look at the settings there should be the option for mpeg4
within mpeg4 you can choose aac encoding

end quote

Hope this helps
