SudokuDan is a free Macintosh Sudoku program. It can generate puzzles and puzzle books; it can solve puzzles you get from elsewhere, and it can give you meaningful hints as you are solving a puzzle based on your progress so far.
It can even generate 4 by 4, 16 by 16, and 25 by 25 puzzles by changing the preferences, but be careful because it's slow to generate big ones.

Overall it is very unattractive. It needs to be tidied up and simplified.
Use some white space, don't crowd things and offer contrast in line thickness and characters.
Needs to make viewing selections straight forward as well.
It is not like there are that many options to Sudoku:
View : w/wo hints, w/wo eliminations, color of answers, font, number of squares, background
Difficulty: Easy, Medium, Hard, Einstein

HOWEVER, this program has two things that set it apart from many other Sudoku apps for the Mac: 1) it can generate its own puzzles (i.e., it doesn't download them from a website or come with a built-in library of puzzles) and you can even generate a book of them directly through this app, and 2) it is the ONLY app available that is capable of generating the 16x16 challenger puzzles that as yet have only been available in puzzle magazines - and it's even capable of generating a 25x25 (or larger... or even a 4x4 puzzle), though the larger puzzles use much more memory and solving them in-program slows it down to a crawl.
Some GUI refinements, a speed bump on the larger puzzle sizes, and better handling of in-program solving would truly make this a 5-star app.
