Bad news and good news in my futile search for an OS X driver for my Umax Astra 2100u...
bad news: The driver doesn''t exist
good news: I can shop without guilt for a new scanner, and never be embarrassed again because my scan got unfavorably compared to a superior HP scan.

Originally I was horrified by the driver interface but it worked so I used it until I updated to OS9. I had to pay for an updated driver on a CD and that has just expired! "timed out" apparently - what's that all about?
EPSON, HEIDELBERG or however it's spelt, CANON, MICROTEK, AGFA etc. there's plenty of choice out there...
Forget UMAX as they forgot you.

At the time of this post (9/14/04), you can download old versions of VistaScan (for Mac OS 9) at ftp://ftp.umax.com/scanners/vscan/
There are versions from 2.4 to 3.7.5 to 3.8.1 for both Macs & Windows.

UMAX SUCKS!!! Why after years no support for my UMAX 2100U at MacOS X. I have never seen a company that so major sucks as UMAX.
WARNING DON'T BUY UMAX!!!

I can't open the URL either.

Thanks for the tip! For some reason umax.com does not allow me to download but the ftp works!
In OS 10.3.9, when I put the URL ftp://ftp.umax.com/scanners/vscan/ into Safari, it opens a network volumn on desktop called "vscan." The drivers can then be copied to your own drive.

no, they could do it. they just don't care about their Mac business.

The actual cost of my Umax Astra 4000 is small to the hours of utter frustration I spent trying to import a scan through Adobe Photoshop CS on my Mac OS X. I failed.
To some extent I also pass blame to Adobe for advising consumers "plug-ins originally intended to work on Mac OS 9 won't appear." What it should have said was "they have never and will never work."
With regard to Umax, I have emailed the Company of my disappointment for its lack of client services and gross contempt for its previous customers. I shall never again buy any its product. The email addresses are: professional@umax.com and marketing@umax.co.uk

I suggest filing a complaint to UMAX corporate. I believe an email is professional@umax.com
I was equally disappointed and actually shocked at their customer service. I believe you CAN order the 1220U driver for OSX. Here's the catch: You have to pay $14.50 for a 9MB file!
Hoping that this company someday...realizes that their customers have other options.

I applaud your fearless postings of mail from irate users, but sadly, they hit all the nails on all the heads. No MacX support on drivers leaves me with a useless scanner. It (VistaScan and VistaScan DA 3.5.2) freezes during the "scan" mode using MacOS9.2 and 10.2.8. What's a poor Mac user to do? I have a UMAX Astra 2200/Dual 450 G4/1.25Gb memory/VistaScan 3.5.2.
We found that using the VueScan (v. 8.02) produced CRAPPY results with this scanner. We have the Astra 2200 (USB) on an iMac running Panther and we just couldn't get the colors right no matter how we played around with the color settings in VueScan. The contrast was way off ... even to the point that Photoshop couldn't fix the image.
Any other driver options??? And where do we send a complaint about unbelievably poor customer service from UMAX?

UMAX has definitely got to look into this matter,
its been years and they have yet to provide a driver for osx. make u wonder what the COMPANY PLANS ARE FOR MACS!! Really regret buying a UMAX Scanner.

I concur! You guys are pathetic! Ignoring your Mac customers and expecting us to stay in OS 8.6 forever -- which was the last driver update available for the UMAX Astra 2100U. I am not going to even try to place it on the Classic side since I have heard nothing but nightmares about it. I have given you ample time to "get with the program." How many years has OS X been out now? Today I am going to go out and purchase a new scanner and you can bet that it will never be a UMAX product again. Windows is not the ONLY OS, or were you not aware of that!

Do not bother to download this, or buy any products from this company ever!!
I sent this to them:
Hi,
I am writing to let you know how disappointed I am with my Umax scanner - or more accurately
the Umax company. I have actually had no problems with the hardware, software of course is a
different story....
I am extremely disappointed that you can't be bothered to release new drivers for your scanners,
in particular the Astra range for OSX. When I purchased this scanner, it was not the cheapest on
the market, but it looked like a good buy, and fulfilled all my criteria. I now of course wish that I
had purchased one from a reputable company, that makes even the slightest attempt to offer decent
customer service.
Your support is absolutely hopeless, as I know very well after speaking for hours on the telephone over
the course of a number of days to your UK 'support' staff, who incidentally can hardly speak english, only
to be told that all they could actually do was take my credit card details to pay for a driver disk, which did
not actually include the driver I need, as it does not exist.
I have been a technical support agent myself for a few years now, and have worked for a number of UK
companies, large and small, supporting many different types of end users and products, and I have to say that
your UK support is the worst I have ever come across, and I would hate to work for your company.
I always make a point of advising any end users that I talk to (which is obviously quite alot) never to buy
any Umax products under any circumstances, as Umax do not value or support their customers in any way.
I am hoping that in the future your company will be bought out by a larger company, with more experience
in customer service, who may actually decide to help out us thousands of Umax customers who have been
left high and dry by an obviously failing, mismanaged and useless company.
I have read thousands of posts on forums, user reviews, and comments on download sites about your
products, all of which - bar none - have been slating your products and your company. It may be worth
checking it out yourselves sometime, and possibly even acting on it.
Kind regards, and best wishes for the future!
You never know!!
