Samsoftware below hit the nail on the head. The interface is atrocious, the codec support is lacking, and the developers are unresponsive (to put it nicely).
Meanwhile, the server is PPC only and they have no plans to port it to Intel - so no running it on Lion at all. Try to ask for that, and they'll moderate your comments into oblivion.
I have been using this since I got my Mac a few years ago and have had no problems. I can hear my guild and therefore it does what I need it to with no crashes, etc.
My oh my. Seeing that this is the only way I can get a comment to the developer to let him know how bad this program actually is. I have tried the support forums on their website, and my posts get screened before they appear. I have tried looking for an email address to contact him, no luck there either. When is Flagship going to realize that the interface that Ventrilo is currently toting around is absolutely god-awful. You have duplicated functionality everywhere, lacking basic features such as:
Window Resizing
Window Management on-screen
Window Placement on launch and exit
As well as any sort of a hint of compliance with the apple interface guidelines. By far this is definitely the worst interface I have ever had to use. Also from what I have seen, it has never changed.
I would normally apologize for being rude and brash about this, because no developer likes to have his/her work talked down about. But frankly, your inability to actually accept that the interface design is pretty poor, or any sort of feedback on your site without having to screen it to prevent someone's opinion being heard of a designer's feelings getting hurt is unacceptable from the stance of a developer. But what am I saying. Ofcourse you must be right. I am so silly to think that someone that has been using Mac OSs for the past 16 years might have a bit of insight as to how an interface should be designed...oh no...Definitely not. No. The windows OS programmer definitely knows heaps more about the mac interface guidelines and functions than an actual OS X programmer and long-time user.
oh good job, way to take forever to release a new version, with a few more relevant features and no backwards compatibility with v.2 servers. AND STILL NO GSM SUPPORT. *golfclap*
No GSM = Useless application. On my wow server there are actually guild which will not recruit mac users because they cannot access the vent server. (This is absolutely true.) Thanks vent. This is typical of the insult Mac users see all to often. A company releases a half hearted version of the app for mac and then site around wondering why no one uses it.
New version, yet it doesn't work at all with Leopard. It wont recognize a connection to the server. The previous version did, but didn't show channels. At least it worked that well. This one is unusable.
Just noticed that version 3.0 for the Mac is available on the Ventrilo site. Also noticed that after 2 years of waiting, the GSM codec is STILL not available for Mac. Unbelievable.
[Version 2.3.2pr15]

Ventrilo is best known for it's superior sound quality and minimal use of CPU resources so as not to interfere with day to day operations of the computer or during online game competitions. It is also preferred for the simple user interface that any first time computer user can very quickly learn because the most commonly used features are immediately visible and can be activated with a single click of the mouse.
