As for the window resizing, you can shrink the window fairly small. I personally use a 12" iBook and wanted to make sure it fit without taking up too much space.
Also, you can click either on the device title, or on the device name in order to turn it on/off.
Let me know if you have any further questions!

Actually, the widget supports sending commands across a LAN. Currently this isn't enabled in the UI, but is a small modification in the Javascript. The directions are on the product page (http://highearthorbit.com/software/indigowidget) and involve uncommenting several lines and putting in your Indigo computer information.
In the future I plan on moving this setting to the back of the widget.
This remote method is how I primarily use the widget myself. ;)

Since the Widget communicates with Indigo via Applescript, the app is required to be opened to interact with the Widget.
The next version of Indigo solves this by employing a client/server architecture. This will remove the need to have Indigo "open" on the server machine for the widget to work.
