Zinio broke after an upgrade to Lion. Is it Zinio or Adobe Air that is broken? Anyone have any ideas?

In summary:
- I haven't bought a physical magazine in a long time, largely thanks to Zinio + iPad, which says a lot.
- For the time-being, the content makes it worth it, even it if the selection isn't wide. (I believe it's wider than any other service though).
- Terrible usability, needs immediate attention.
- Performance is weak, but it's never crashed and behaves consistently. (v4)

Additional thoughts/comments:
I'm not sure where this will land in the sequence of reviews, but I can say that Adobe Air is not the problem, it's the development. Anything can be made to perform well in Air. Zinio simply needs to invest more into development.

And I mean they REALLY need to pick-up the pace on this app. It's an incredibly valuable tool for content consumption, but very poorly considered.

The primary problem? Access. When I open the app, I want to have easy access to my library of issues. It needs to be as easy as looking at a bookshelf—even if just the spines vs. the entire cover. I don't want to have to click the year, and then click-through all the months to get back to an older issue. It's idiotic.

I have tried v3 before and it was horrible and therefore never got any interest into Zinio.

Then I tried iPad version. Initially it was horrible as well, very sluggish. The current version feels better.

Then I tried v4 beta. It was still based on Adobe AIR. VERY VERY POOR performance!!
Zinio is just a demonstration that Adobe s*cks! Uses a lot of CPU, yet the animations and page turn, fade in and out, are ALL EXTREMELY slow and sluggish!!!

And I am running it on almost latest MBP with 6GB or RAM!

I would even say when browsing the magazines, iPad version is even smoother than on desktop!

I really hope they get rid of Adobe.

I had problems installing Zinio Reader and downloading a subscribed mag on 2 machines. I sent a request to Zinio two times but they didn't answer. So I contacted the publisher but even their request to Zinio stayed unanswered. Very bad support, very bad behaviour, very annoying. :-(

It misses full single page viewing option which exists on the UB testing version. Very inconvenience. I will fall back to test version.

Strange...while it does say version 3.0.17013 on the Zinio Web site, I have had version 3.0.17024 installed for over a month now. Naturally, I'm assuming build 17024 comes after build 17013. The date on the "current" 17013 installer is 3/25/09 so it's not "fresh" off the shelf. Very strange indeed.

Strangeness again... Another "dated" version of the Zinio Reader is published and it's still not the latest version (at least not according to the version I have installed). The 3.0.17019 installer package is dated March 31, 2009. I still have 3.0.17024 installed. You gotta wonder if this is intentional or is some slacking on their job.

I installed the new UB test version the reader and delivery manager and it works great. I am running 10.5.2 on a MacBook Pro. It is a bit faster than the old ppc version (which I had no problem with). I get several US magazines this way as the prices for things like Mac World in Australia are just extorionate ($AUD 12-15!!) and the Zinio reader is not a bad way to read magazines. The delivery is automatic and very simple. I hope they don't go to a browser based reader like their example iphone reader as that is pathetic. I like the reader and if they could make a native application for the iphone/touch I would be very happy. I have been quite a long time Zinio user (about 3 years). I highly recommend Zinio.

Zinio seems to have updated their app to v2.3 and compiled it as a UB:

Still shows as PPC not UB on my Intel iMac. It does work though.

I like the idea of being able to read my magazines in a digital form on my MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, because of the lack of development for this app there are couple of problems:

1. CPU intensive when running the download manager. Uses 100% of CPU when downloading a digital mag. Also, for those on Intel machines, this app has not been compiled as a UB.

2. This is not Leopard compatible. Will not open any old or new mags. As most of the reviewers have stated, obtaining support is futile.

At this point, this software is useless to me.

Had emailed Zinio a few times too as the reader has never run very well on Intel compared to PPC. They replied and said they aren't working on updating Zinio Reader but they are working to make the magazines so they open in your web browser or something like that. Basically they are hoping to cover more systems that way.
