MailTags allows you to add comments, due dates, projects and priority to your messages right inside your mail viewer window. You can then this metadata as the basis for Spotlight searches, Smart Mailboxes, and Mail Rules. For example, you can create a Smart Mailbox that will show you all messages in project: "Great Novel" that have a due date in the next three days.

What's New
Version 3.0.2:
MailTags 3.0.2 is a maintenance release that addresses minor issues and provides some feature improvements.
MailTags 3.0.2 is a free update for all MailTags 3 customers.
Hi Indev,
Yes it's with 3.0.2. Then again I also use MailHub and Dockstar so maybe i'ts too much for poor old Mail to handle?
My biggest frustration with Mail is the inability to (easily) change the subject line to something meaningful to me so maybe you could develope a subset of MailTags that just does that?
Just picked up the new version. Great work. On sale right now for $20. Worth every cent. Makes keeping mail organized so much easier.
Support this developer, he's got a handle on how to be more productive on the mac. Saves me time every day.
It would be nice if the dev reset the trial period with the release of version 3. I had the beta so when I installed version 3 I had to purchase right away.
Does anyone know where to download the lates beta of v3? Could not find it anywhere at their site.
I have v3 Preview 1 (I no longer know how I got it).
They mention a Preview 2 on their site but no way to download it.
I couldn't live without it! MailTags and Mail-Act-On (from same developer) are an essential part of my daily workflow. Without those Plugins Apple Mail is completely useless and feels medieval. Never had a problem with there performance or stability of this plugin.I would recommend that everybody should test it. The support is also responsive as far I as I remember - just had to ask a question once. I also don't understand any complains about an upgrade fee for a new major release. Of course somethings could be better: the handling of keywords management could be a bit improved. But I really like and appreciate this plugin as it is...
Was nice back on Mail.app on Snow-Leo, but now, this version is completely incompatible with lion mail.app. Sad enough, i bought this handy extension recently, only to learn now, that i will have to buy a new license "anytime soon", when the lion-compatibiliy has been reached...
Terrific utility! It works as advertised and adds all kinds of searchable information to emails. I checked their website for a Lion-compatible version, and their new beta is working quite well also, with a slightly different interface
after Installation of MailTags I could not Quit Mail (it hang forever).
I had to force quit Mail. Since the problem did not disapear I finally uninstalled MailTags with their uninstaller.
Well then after next launch of Mail all my Mails were EMPTY. only the Header but no content.
Curious... I headed to my ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes and watched for my Mails.
In all my folders there were either 0 Mails OR one "0.emlx" in the Messages folders. Those ones even contained Text (via QuickLook).
I had to start my TimeMachine to get the whole Mail folder back.
BEWARE before testing:
YOU MUST do a complete BACKUP
I wish I could say that this software IS STABLE, but as of 2.6.1 it is NOT. Bought it yesterday (MUPromo) and installed. Everything seemed fine, but I noticed that my hard disc seemed to loose space. I was VERY low on space (down to under 20 Gb on a 500 Gb disc), so I noticed this. Thought I was hallucinating, until I came back in from working some 2-3hours later and I had a blue screen - the system was totally frozen. Finally got it to boot and had "0" hard disc space left!! HAd taken al memory too, and so I couldn't even boot from the Apple OSX DVD. Finally go it to boot momentarily and threw out a couple of files and started working, then watched as - slowly . . ever so slowly . . . hard disc space returned.
Realized this must have the biggest memory leak in the history of memory leaks!!! Then I found the following dialog describing this exact problem from back in 2009:
Apparently this problem is either BACK, or was not really fixed. Either way I have to uninstall and am out $19.95! I hope the developer gets the message here and actually fixes this problem, otherwise this software is dangerous! And this is a shame because I REALY need its features. Great idea. BAD problem. I'll be monitoring the solution closely.
FYI I am running a late 2008 2x3 GHz Quad Core Intel Mac Pro with 12 Gb of RAM.
The tag serching in Mail Tags' new spotlight menu doesn't seem to work. I applied a Tag to a number of messages that I preferred not ot keep in my mailbox and then did a search after moving the messages to the trash. Spotlight didn't find them even using the "All Mailboxes" selection. When going to Trash and searching they all came up.
The plug-in seems fabulous, though I agree with earlier comments about the interface. Hope this bug and interface issues are resolved.
Smart Mailbox condition "MailTags Due Date is within ___ days..." not working. This function did work fine, up until yesterday. I don't know if these actions had any effect on the problem, but I ran a defrag (using TechTool Pro 4), and when I came back to the main volume and deleted/rebuilt my Spotlight index, and then opened Mail, my Smart Mailbox "action," which was set to pull all Mail items that are flagged and have a MailTags Due Date within 1 day showed nothing (there should be several items). So, I edited the Smart Mailbox, removing the MailTags condition, keeping the Flagged condition, and they all reappeared. I confirmed that I have several items with due dates today, tomorrow, etc. Then I repeated the setup of the MailTags Due Date and they disappeared from the Smart Mailbox again.
On a similar subject, I would like to have a Due Date Within tag that also shows all past due dates for unprocessed items.

We have developed an mdimporter that will take care the issue and restore spotlight indexing of existing mailtags (information is still there, spotlight just doesn't know about it)

There were some performance issues with this in 3.0/3.0.1 but I did some significant optimization in 3.0.2 and it should be much more snappy

I tried Meta when Mailtags for Snow Leopard had not yet come out and found that is just was not as simple to use.
Great to have this back in a stable edition!

Doesn't seem to be working, no keyword searches (dynamic folders) work. Could be I missed that it was not working in the release notes.
Uninstalling for now.
