I always used Wavelab on Windows but now I have new iMac (and new to Mac OSX).
After using several audio editors it is clear to me -- Wave Editor is pure power and great to work with!
It cover all my needs and the Vst and AU with layers is plain fantastic !
IMO the layer feature is the best I have ever encountered in a audio editor! Only for this Wave Editor earns 5.1/2 stars
In some ways it even leaves the hugh Wavelab in his shadow. Top notch stuff !!!

Concl. the best Mac OSX audio editor ATM.

I use WaveEditor to record and edit classical music and I think it’s the best app available for this task. I even prefer it over some of the more famous, expensive and feature-rich classic-specialized DAWs (most of them are Windows only). Recording with WaveEditor is quick and simple, just one click (or keystroke; every action is customizable), perfect when recording live. It’s rock-solid and fast, very fast. And everything looks and feels mac-like, clean; no clunky virtual hi-fi-rack-mixer UI like in other audio apps. And then the editing... well editing in WaveEditor is really on a different level than anything else, photoshop-like layers, smart-edits, bezier fades... Incredible...

Of course WaveEditor is a pro-app. Yes it isn’t the easiest audio editor to learn, but the most sophisticated and customizable – and in the end it’s the fastest and easiest to use. So maybe it’s not for everybody: If you’re looking for an easy audio editor, with no learning curve and dozens of effects and features (only halfway implied; but fun!), then there are other apps around. If you are interested in real functionality and depth within the features, professional UI, WaveEditor is the way to go.

Not nearly as good as Amadeus Pro or even Sound Studio.
And at $80, it's seems like a total rip-off.

You have got to be kidding!
I just tried Amadeus Pro. I guess that depending on your needs it's not bad. Maybe it's even worth the $40 price.

I spent 20 minutes trying to do something very basic: apply a reverb and a limiter to a WAV file.

Using the same presets for both plugins, I then compared the results in both Wave Editor and Amadeus Pro.
In Wave Editor the process was fast and easy. In Amadeus I had to wait a few minutes for the audio to be processed.

I got a lot of noise with Amadeus and decided to focus on the reverb by itself. While the audio did sound processed, I could not listen to the reverb's tail. Hitting stop or listening to the song's end gave me an abrupt ending. In Wave Editor I was able to listen perfectly to that reverb.

Exporting to MP3 yielded files that sounded pretty much the same (at 320 kbps), but I prefer the process in Wave Editor by far.

I don't think that Amadeus Pro has the advanced features that Wave Editor has. Just briefly changing pitch to another file resulted in some digital clicks while using Amadeus Pro. The sound was fine in Wave Editor. Wave Editor also provided more useful metrics (e.g., Cents, Intervals).

On startup, WaveEditor identified a problematic VST plugin. Amadeus Pro gave me a warning only AFTER trying to use the plugin. I seldom use VST but tried this because of the error message I had received in Wave Editor.

I'm not making a thorough comparison, going into mastering, fades, combining different files/sample rates/bit-depths, etc., but wanted to address YOSHINATSU's post. BTW, I also tried Sound Studio. Don't recall much about it except that I removed it the same day I installed it. One I did like is TwistedWave, but I still prefer WaveEditor.

I agree with ESPIRIDION : Amadeus is sooooo bad it is a shame to even use it for free.

Seriously, I used almost every audio editor (for Windows too). It's simple, for Windows Wavelab is the best. For OS X Wave Editor is the best. Period.

You may want to check out their tutorials. This used to be a more expensive program. I believe the previous price was $250, and at $80 it is a great deal.

Some old tutorials:
http://www.razormaid.com/Training/
Some not as old:
http://vimeo.com/audiofileeng/videos

The manual is also useful. For example, you may want to check out the Layers feature.
http://www.audiofile-engineering.com/support/manuals/we/1/html/index.html

Of course, in the end you have to decide whether this works for you or not. In my limited experience with other similar applications (e.g., Audacity, Amadeus Pro, Twisted Wave, Sound Studio) I always come back to Wave Editor. It gets continuously improved, support is great, and I get work done more efficiently with it.

This is by far, and I mean BY VERY FAR, the best audio editor for OS X.
It has the most intuitive interface ever for editing audio. The layers are absolutely brilliant and never seen before, even in pro audio editors as Wavelab.

Plain simple, if you are in need for a very powerfull audio editor and don't want to spend a lot of money, get this right now ! Even if you have more money to spare, buy it anyway.

I spent hours trying to understand how to properly use this software. I've been using Amadeus Pro and learned that program very quickly, but this one is just not very intuitive and has a steep learning curve. The manual is nice but not detailed enough and has no index.

FYI Amadeus Pro is really really bad. I really cannot understand why people are even considering using Amadeus. I mean, it crashes a lot, it has a ugly interface, it has only basic editing tools,..
Not sure why you are saying Wave Editor is complex to use. I have used many pro audio editors but Wave Editor is just the best of the bunch.

In addition to the videos posted by WOOFSPUP, there are more videos here:

Regarding the software itself, the more I use it the more useful features I discover. Highly recommended.
As mentioned, this used to be more expensive. At the current price it is definitely a bargain.

Finally I found a useable and flexible audio editor.
Formerly using Amadeus Pro I am very pleased with all the possibilities you get with Wave Editor.
Layering is a wonderful and very creative way to master and edit your audio files.
The work flow is beautiful to say the least.

My main audio engineering tool ! ! !

"[Improved] removed import support for AC3 files"

How is _removing_ the ability to support AC3 files an improvement? This must be either a typo or a really bad decision by the developers.

Can someone explain this?

AC3 support was removed due to licensing issues. It will be added back in a future release. The removal of this feature is actually listed in the "Remaining bugs and missing features" category.

I am a producer/audio engineer for about 18 years. Used a lot of audio editors for both Windows and Mac.
Sinds I use Wave Editor I never looked back on the Wavelab and Soundtrack Pro days. Wave Editor is clearly the best for editing with the revolutionary layers features.
Fantastic flexible audio editing mastering can be achieved. AU and VST plugin support is very good.

This app could easily cost a bucket load of dollars but at this price it is real bargain.

Forget about Wavelab and Soundtrack Pro. Both very professional editors but Wave Editor is on par but has the edge with the layer features.

A must buy for every musician/audio engineer !
