This software will always fail on a new install of OS X because it assumes, quite wrongly, that the directory /usr/local/lib/ exists, and if it doesn't, when it tries to copy all it's files there, it ends up copying each file to (and over) the FILE /usr/local/lib

To fix this, open the terminal and

sudo rm /usr/local/lib
sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/lib/

Once you do this, and reinstall, then RTCS becomes at least usable, if not graceful.

It pops up a confirmation dialog after sending the email to your phone, which is somewhat obnoxious, but it does seem to do what it is supposed to do from there, sorta. I can't get it to talk to iTunes, but I can manually browse the library to find the songs I want.

Sorry - I mentioned 3gp because my phone won't let me use mp3s as ringtones, but 3gp files converted using Make3gp (available via MacUpdate, free license) work like a charm.

Strangely Ringtone Chop Shop can't directly save the resulting mp3 onto your computer; the documentation suggests you're supposed to e-mail it to your phone's e-mail account (perhaps because in pre-bluetooth days it was difficult to transfer files from computer onto phone), but you can enter any e-mail address. The e-mail you receive will contain a URL; you can open the file in a web browser but unless you have QuickTime Pro you can't save the darned file; then again, QuickTime Pro can also save mp3 files as 3gp, making this program unnecessary for those with QT Pro. So use "SimpleWget" (also available on MacUpdate, free license) to grab the file. Feed thru Make3GP, and you're set.

Worked just as asked, pity i couldnt save my file to desktop and just send it via bluetooth, cos its faster.

Software update: RingtoneChopShop now has support for AAC ringtone format. This new is especially useful for Sprint PCS users with the MM- series phones. AAC ringtones sounds very loud and are very clear on these phone (such as Sanyo MM-5600). No new upload is necessary. Just fire up copy of your Ringtone Chop Shop and choose AAC option when sending the ringer to a phone.

Question:

Why is this application better than doing the same thing with iTunes?

I have made every single ringtone with iTunes. I can adjust the length, the start and end points, etc.., and for the most part iTunes does not crash. It also is not operator dependent.

iTunes does not support all mobile formats. Then you still need a way to send it to a phone. Ringtone Chop Shop provides all the steps necessary to achieve this in one compact application.

I was curious to know how you made a ringtone with iTunes. I tried in ITunes and Garage Band but I cannot get them to work on my phone. I have a Motorola i870

Another update: the app needs the OS to be at least 10.3.x, there was a significant change in the underlying technology between version 10.2 and 10.3 of Mac OS. Sorry about that, I will be looking for ways to bring this software to users of the older Macs as well.

Here's an update. It seems there are some crashing issue on older Macs. I have tested it on Mac not older than 1 yr. Mac OS version 10.3.7 and 10.3.9. As far as I know I do not see a reason why it would not on older Macs either, but I will keep testing and keep you updated.
