Boom Recorder is a multitrack field recorder. It has been designed to be used during the high stress production of a tv/film shoot, a concert or a live stage performance. Boom Recorder has many metadata fields that is are used during a film production, making it easy to keep track of the many audio files in post production. For concerts and live stage performances it is possible to record up to 128 (Boom Recorder Pro) tracks continuously for many hours.
The main features of Boom Recorder are:
16 bit, 24 bit integer and 32 bit float sample formats.
48 kHz,
What's New
Version 8.0.0:
Adding AppleScript state property, which may be polled to show the current Boom Recorder state.
Boom Recorder is now build with xcode 4.1, which means that Boom Recorder will only run on Mac OS X 10.7 or higher.
Fixes depricated API calls.
Removed divide by zero error when loading foreign audio files.
Increased contrast of buttons in the patch-bay.
Click through enabled for transport buttons and patch bay.
Scroll wheel now functions in the patch-bay.
Maximum attenuation is for input/output mixer 114 dB, or infinity of course. This may reduce CPU time a little.
Renamed BoomRecorder to Boom Recorder, make sure you update your AppleScript applications.
Added Boom Recorder Lite and Boom Recorder Pro applications for Apple's App Store.
Renaming menu items in case of other names.
Removing Register menu item, and preferences panel for App Store and for value added reseller versions.
Fixed incident reporter to be able to take screenshots again (maybe it was only a problem when running inside the debugger).
Boom Recorder is now a 32 bit and 64 bit application.
Application will now be signed by Take Vos's developer key.
Vertical meters:
Channel name on meters can be removed for more space.
Saving and loading of input and output patchbay has been fixed when using more than 128 channels.
Show maximum peak value in meters, click to reset.
Remembers which utility windows are open, and shows these as pushed buttons on the main window.
Enabled full screen mode on main window.
CoreAudio callback starts an release pool so that the "leaking" error message don't show up in the log file.

Unlike other commets here, I've had a great experience with Boom Recorder, which has taken over as my chosen app for in-field recording.
My needs are simple: 24bit 48KHz recording from various Mics via an Edirol UA-25. I want a high quality uncompressed file format, and appreciate the ability to record a couple of versions and have a 'log file' of what happened. QT just can't do this out of the box.
I have SoundTrack Pro, but it seemed to hiccup, making otherwise good takes unusable. Then there's little things: the meters on input don't match the meters on output. It's not viable for recording. Sorry. No Cigar.
Boom Recorder on the other hand turns my PowerBook into a sort of Nagra - it just works. I love the new Cmd-Opt-T split take feature. Furthermore, the Time-Of-Day time code recorded in the audio is preserved in Final Cut Pro - even the new CAF format doesn't do that.
The only reason I can't give it a perfect score is that I really want to monitor what's been recorded. It's vital for STP because when it drops the ball you can hear it. But I've been using this app intensively as of late, and it's won my confidence.
$30 for QuickTime Pro, which enables recording functionality in QuickTime and supports OSX compatible device.
$0 for "Audio In" , a free audio recorder.
What's this have that others don't? SMPTE.
Truly SMPTE is an essential for professional recording work.
I know that CoreAudio has support for SMPTE. So theoretically, it shouldn't be hard to add support for SMPTE when coding using CoreAudio for recording. I question wether the price of this program reflects real-world development costs.
Of course, if I had the time to make a better app then I would. So there we are.

The application BoomRecorder has unexpectedly quit.
The system and other applications have not been affected.

Reading the manual makes it very clear that there is no sample editor. For $111, I would expect to get Adobe Audition at least. -or Audacity, which is free software!
If you can't edit the samples, what is the purpose of such program ? (I'm speaking as a programmer and a Audio/Video editor!)
Not rated, because it crashes.

$111 for this????
A bit too minimalistic for that kind of dough, don't you think? At best, this is a $40 app ...tops. Get real. And good luck.
Elementary question here: What interface is used to get the discrete audio inputs into the Mac?
Manufacturers? Models? What do you recommend?
It would seem that the mating of this software to that hardware would be esssential -- let the software release is silent on this.
Thanks.

as a software intended for use with video/film, this app also should support interfaces widely used in this field: among them is the family of the very popular decklink video cards (4-12 channel audio). see: http://www.decklink.com
AJA is another popular brand producing such cards.
I tried the BoomRecorder demo with a DeckLink card without success :(
only 2 of the cards 8 channels were selectable as interface and even there no audio went through.

48 kHz, 96 kHz, 192 kHz and other sample rates, with optional fake pull up for each.
Broadcast WAVE Format (BFW) audio file format; compatible with most digital audio and video editing workstations.
Can either jam or continuous sync against timecode signal read from any audio channel, or use wall clock time in cases where no timecode signal is available.
Long recordings are continued over multiple 2 GB audio files.
multi-polyphonic file handling; allows multiple copies of audio in mono, stereo and polyphonic audio files.
Stores metadata such as project, scene, take, roll, date and track names in the iXML chunk and in the sound reports.
Solution for reading BWF files into Final Cut Pro with timecode.
Once you have downloaded Boom Recorder you have a 30 day trial license which is equivalent to the Boom Recorder Pro license level. This will give you time to test the full production flow and decide which of the two license levels below you would like to order:
Boom Recorder Lite: 2 channels (timecode will use 1 channel), priced at $20 USD.
Boom Recorder Pro: 128 channels (timecode will use 1 channel), priced at $260 USD.
