This addresses one specific problem that "open safe files" can cause. It's by no means the worst. There have been problems caused by "open safe files" in the fast, there will be new problems in the future. If you just disable "open safe files" you will lose nothing but the possibility of suffering from a future security hole.

Thing is, there's already one of these apps available and it has been available for several days now. I forget the name of it but it is listed here on MacUpdate.

Wrong. Do a search. Here at MU. There has been a software to warn/block unwanted widget installations for a few days now
